Daniel Clarey
Daniel Lee Clarey, affectionately known as Dan, left this world peacefully on August 9, 2025, in Freeland, Michigan, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born on July 2, 1949, in Midland, Michigan, to Earl Clarey and Geraldine (Streeter) Clarey, Dan was a man who lived his life with a warm and engaging spirit that touched all who knew him. Dan was the beloved brother to Michael (Ann) Clarey, James (Connie) Clarey, and Carol (Rick) Burger.
Dan's journey through life was marked by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family. His former wife, Debra Sugg, played a significant role as the mother of their children, and together they raised a family that would become Dan's pride and joy. His loving and committed wife of 27 years, Judy Clarey, stood by his side as a beacon of love and support. Judy spent every day taking gentle and tender care of Dan as his illness progressed, she was devoted and loving to the very end. Dan and Judy created countless cherished memories together, including spending time together on their boat, wintering at their Florida home, creating precious friendships, many days spent hitting estate sales, and golfing.
Dan was a devoted father to Molly Clarey, Matthew Clarey and his wife Dawn, and Michael Clarey and his wife Julie. His role as a stepfather to Dennis Mashue was embraced with the same dedication and warmth. The legacy of Dan's generous spirit continued through his grandchildren Stefan, Madeline, Hannah, Benjamin, Colton, Tucker, Evan, Carter, Kennedy, and Addison, and was further brightened by the joy brought by his great-grandchildren Ava, Stanley, Rosie, Louis, and Hayes.
After graduating Midland High School in 1967, Dan attended Ferris State University. His expertise in drafting paved the way for a remarkable career as a Safety Engineer at Dow Corning Corporation. His professional life was distinguished not only by his dedication to safety and precision but also by the lasting and lifelong relationships he built with his colleagues.
Dan's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him. An avid golfer, Dan's happiest moments were often found on the greens, where his friendly demeanor made him a favorite among his golfing companions. Hunting and fishing were not just hobbies for Dan; they were passions that connected him with nature and provided treasured moments of solitude and reflection. The Clarey home on Wixom Lake was a hub of joy and hospitality, thanks to Dan's and Judy's love of backyard entertaining. Their fish frys and bonfires became legendary gatherings that friends and family looked forward to with great anticipation. Dan's many talents included being a gifted woodworker, with his handmade furniture pieces serving as both functional items and expressions of his artistry.
Dan's character was a tapestry of humor, friendliness, and love. His ability to light up a room with a funny story or a hearty laugh was unmatched. Described by those who knew him as the epitome of a warm family man, Dan cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. His legacy is carried forward not just in the memories shared but also in the lives of those he touched with his boundless love and generosity of time and talents.
As we say farewell to Dan, we celebrate a life well-lived, a heart well-loved, and a spirit that will continue to inspire for generations to come. His journey on earth may have ended, but the stories, lessons, and love he imparted will forever remain.
