In Loving Memory of Daniel Lee "Lum" Edwards
July 11, 1942 – October 10, 2025
Daniel Lee "Lum" Edwards, 83, of Lancaster, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on October 10, 2025, surrounded by his devoted wife and sons.
Born on July 11, 1942, in Boonville, Indiana, to James Arles "Lum" and Lillian Blanche (Campbell) Edwards, Danny was raised with a deep sense of family, faith, and work ethic that would define his entire life. The family later moved to Lynnville, Indiana, where Danny graduated from Lynnville High School in 1960. A proud Lindies athlete, he carried his competitive spirit and team loyalty with him throughout life.
Shortly after graduation, Danny married his high school sweetheart, Julia Ellen Robinson, on December 2, 1961 - beginning a marriage that would span more than six decades. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and devotion to family.
Danny worked at J&J Cleaners during and after high school before moving to Indianapolis, where he worked for Switzer Schweitzer on an assembly line. Driven by ambition and steadiness, he later completed 1,500 hours of barber college, practicing his craft on patients at the Indiana State Hospital. After apprenticing with his father-in-law, Dennis Robinson, Dan opened his own barbershop on Main Street in Lynnville in 1967. Known for his precision and good humor, he became a fixture in town - a man you could count on for a good haircut and a better conversation.
In 1974, Danny joined Squaw Creek Coal Company, beginning what would become a 25-year career in the mining industry. Starting as a laborer, he quickly earned respect through hard work, adaptability, and integrity - eventually serving as a welder, heavy equipment operator, and crane driver. He balanced this demanding work with continued involvement in his community, serving for 25 years in the Lynnville Volunteer Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and was the primary truck driver.
After the mine's closure in 1997, Danny transitioned to a new chapter as the Superintendent at Boonville Country Club, a role that perfectly blended his love of the outdoors, craftsmanship, and golf. Despite no prior experience, he rose to the challenge, helping shape the course's "new nine" and nurturing its fairways and greens with care. His dedication paid off when, in 2006, he proudly shot his age - 64 - on his home course.
In 2007, Dan and Julia relocated to Lancaster, South Carolina, beginning an active and rewarding retirement. At the Lancaster Golf Club, Dan continued to share his love for the game as a starter, marshal, and pro shop attendant for 12 years. His friendly nature and easy smile made him a favorite among members and visitors alike. Danny earned multiple Senior Club Championships and recorded a career-low round of 63 - milestones that reflected both his skill and joy of the game.
Danny's interests reflected his vibrant, hands-on spirit: golfing with friends and family, playing cards and billiards, fast-pitch softball, motorcycle racing, camping, and bird hunting. But above all, his greatest pride was his family - his wife, sons, and grandchildren, whose accomplishments and happiness brought him endless joy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Julia Ellen, and their sons Gregory (Linda), Douglas (Stacy), and Bruce (Emily). He leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren: Tyler (Brice), Kennedy, Grant, Halle (Hunter Lewis), Carly, Taylor, Sam, and Lauren. Danny is also survived by his sisters Edna Jane Spencer and Barbara Ann Bohrer, eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Earl Eugene and James Ray Edwards.
A celebration of Danny's life will be held at Bradley Colonial Chapel in Boonville, IN. Visitation from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM on October, 18, 2025. Service to follow. Burial at Lynnville Cemetery.
Danny will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, integrity, and kindness - someone who never shied from hard work, loved a good laugh, and found his greatest happiness in family, friendship, and a well-struck golf ball. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the values he modeled, and the memories that will forever bring smiles to those who knew and loved him.
"May the fairways be green, the putts be true, and the rounds be eternal.
"Success in golf and life depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind and character."
"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect."
