Known as Danny in his youth and early adulthood, and then Dan in his later adulthood, he graduated from Dale High School and attended Murray State College in Tishomingo and later transferred to Oklahoma Christian College. He met his wife, Pamela Christine Shelton, at church while attending Murray State, and the two were married on May 30, 1968, in Tishomingo. He served in the Oklahoma National Guard and was selected to be part of their competitive shooting team. He was also in the first class of reserve deputy sheriffs in Pottawatomie County.
Dan went to work at Tinker Air Force Base, where he worked for 12 years. He began teaching Bible classes and occasionally preaching while in high school. He continued to be active in the church and was hired as the first youth minister for the Highland Church of Christ in Tecumseh, Oklahoma, while he was working at Tinker. This led to his desire to go into full-time ministry, and he left Tinker to attend the preacher’s training program at Harding University. After graduating, he spent the next 36 years preaching the gospel for churches in Texas and Oklahoma before retiring and moving back to Shawnee in 2018.
Dan enjoyed hunting, fishing, and livestock. One of his early dreams was to own a quarter horse ranch, and he had two pet longhorn steers while he was preaching in Broken Bow. Most of all, he loved his family and serving the Lord.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 27, 2024, 10:30 a.m., at the Highland Church of Christ, 905 E. Walnut St., Tecumseh, Oklahoma 74873.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to “In Search of the Lord’s Way” (https://www.searchtv.org/).
