Daniel Joseph Goergen, aged 75, passed away on September 26, 2024, in Kearney, Nebraska. Born on September 19, 1949, in Mitchell, South Dakota, Daniel, affectionately known as Dan, lived a life marked by dedication to his country, his family, and his passions.
Dan graduated from Rapid City Central High School in 1968 and soon after joined the Navy, as part of the Brown Water River Rats. serving valiantly during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. His commitment to service continued with many years in the National Guard in South Dakota, embodying the true spirit of a soldier through and through.
• Professionally, Dan was a respected Respiratory Therapist at FT. Meade Hospital in Sturgis, South Dakota, where he eventually retired. His work impacted many, providing care and comfort to those in need.
Dan's personal life was filled with love and joy.
During his time in the Navy. Dan met Margaret (Peggy) Cheney, married and had 3 beautiful daughters Tina Torres, Heather Rose, and Jodie Lewis. Later in life he would move to Nebraska and marry Caramella "Candy," and adding 2 Step- children, Sarah and Zackery Kennedy. He was a loving father to his children and cherished his role as a grandfather to seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who brought immense happiness to his life.
A man of many interests, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. Dan became deeply involved in wood carving and leather working, even running his own online store named Dingus Dans! He was also an active member of the Veterans of Vietnam Motorcycle Club, where he enjoyed camaraderie and shared experiences with fellow combat veterans.
Raised in the Catholic Church during his early years in Rapid City, Dan carried the values of his faith throughout his life. His commitment to community was evident in his choice to support animal shelters, reflecting his special love for dogs and his broader compassionate nature.
Dan is survived by his wife, Caramella; daughters, Tina Torres, Heather Rose, and Jodie Lewis; grandchildren, Roby, Timmy, Jamey, Cody, Zane, Chase, and Ayla; greatgrandchildren, Tallyn, Gabe, Wren, Karsen, and Kiezlee; siblings, Dorothy Smith, Carla Fitzer, David Goergen, and Diane Dale; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Marian Goergen; grandparents, Nick and Anna Goergen, and Adolf and Zita Schmidt; stepdaughter, Sarah Kennedy; and nephews, Adam and Wayne Dale.
A funeral service is planned for Friday June 13th 2025, 1:30pm at the Black Hills National cemetery . In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to B.A.C.A.N dog rescue, honoring Dan's lifelong love for animals.
Dan's legacy of service, love, and craftsmanship will be remembered by all who knew him. Hutchins Funeral Home, Franklin, Nebraska assisted the Georgen family with these cremation services.
