Daniel L. Howerter

Daniel L. Howerter, age 79, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 9:18 PM on Thursday, October 30th, 2025 at OSF ST. Mary's Medical Center, Galesburg, Illinois surrounded by his family. He was born on June 13th, 1946 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Harry "Vern" and Mildred (Johnson) Howerter. He attended and graduated from Galesburg High School in the class of 1964. He married Carol Black on December 3rd, 1967 at the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg, Illinois. Surviving is his wife, Carol of Galesburg, Illinois; his children: Bradley Daniel (Michelle) Howerter of East Galesburg, Illinois, Todd Michael (Sarah) Howerter of Knoxville, Illinois, and Kelley Lynn (Justin) Kellerstrass of Knoxville, Illinois; grandchildren: Shaylee, Daniel, Declan, Jase, Hannah, Millie, Adalynn, and Emery. His brother, Harry Howerter, Jr. of Galesburg, Illinois. Sister-in-law, Connie Howerter of Galesburg, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jack Howerter and Tom Howerter, and 2 sister-in-law's, Sharon Howerter, and Delores Howerter. He played basketball in school, and was an avid roller skater. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from December 16th, 1965 to October 29th, 1967, He was a member of the Galesburg First United Methodist Church for over 50 years, and a member of the Galesburg American Legion. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 33 years. He enjoyed fishing, tennis, basketball, motorcycle riding, playing Blue Grass music on the banjo and violin, watching the Grand Ole Opry, mowing on his rider, and watching the Chicago Bears. His kids and grandkids were his whole world. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 8th, 2025 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, with a time of sharing at 1:00 PM at the Hurd-Hendricks Fellowship Center in Knoxville, Illinois. Full military rites to honor his service will be at 4:00 PM in front of Hurd-Hendricks Fellowship Center in Knoxville, Illinois. Private burial will be in the Victoria Cemetery, Victoria, Illinois. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to the Knox County Humane Society.
