Daniel Eugene Keene, 77, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully, Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024, at Community Hospital, Munster, Indiana.
Daniel was born June 10, 1947, in Hammond, Indiana, the son of Bernard Keene and Frances (Tomaszewski) Keene.
A lifelong resident of the area, living in La Porte since 1981, Daniel grew up in Michigan City, Indiana, attending St. Stanislaus Catholic grade school and then graduating from Elston High School, where he played football. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in accounting from Purdue University and began his career as an accountant at American Home Foods, before transitioning to Accurate Castings until his retirement.
In addition to his professional achievements, Daniel was drafted into the United States Army, proudly serving with the Military Police at the Presidio in San Francisco, California. On June 5, 1981, at the Wesleyan Church in La Porte, Indiana, Daniel married Kathie (Menzie) Keene, who preceded him in death in 2000.
Beyond his career and military service, Danny cherished life's simple pleasures. He loved spending time at Washington Park Beach, exploring Indiana's festivals, and listening to live music, with rock 'n' roll and bluegrass holding a special place in his heart – especially the music of Alison Krauss. A true food enthusiast, Danny had a special fondness for Polish dishes like pierogies and paczkis.
His passion for sports was undeniable; he was a devoted fan of Notre Dame football and the Chicago Bears. Yet, nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by his family. Whether it was holidays, sporting events, birthday parties, cookouts or trips to Chicago, if his grandchildren were there, Danny made sure he was there too. Always up for a shopping trip or trying a new restaurant, he relished every moment spent with loved ones.
Danny took immense pride in providing for his family. He was the first to step up to fix anything, always dependable and ready to lend a hand. Christmas, however, held an especially dear place in his heart. For Danny, it wasn't about the presents – it was about sharing the day with those he loved most.
Daniel Keene will be remembered as a joyful soul who loved to laugh and celebrate life. His spirit and kindness have left an indelible impression on all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy will live on through the memories he created and the love he shared with his family and friends.
Daniel is survived by his step-daughter, Janie (Christopher) Hagenow of Noblesville, Indiana; stepson, David (Darcie) Harrell of Ashville, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Zachary (Maria) Ulmer, Kate Ulmer, Maya Harrell and Maxwell Harrell; and his two precious great-grandchildren, Elliott and Everett Ulmer.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 20 years, Kathie Keene; two brothers, Carl Keene and Richard Keene; and two sisters, Jacqueline Bilka and JoAnne Steele.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, Indiana, where the family will receive friends for a visitation and Celebration of his life on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, Indiana, where Military Honors will be rendered.
