Daniel L. Leary of Bonita Springs, Florida, passed away on August 16, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. He was a former resident of Huntington, CT, and Milford, CT. He has also been a resident of The Colony at Pelican Landing for 11 years. Dan was born on June 3, 1949, in Providence, RI. He was the son of the late Eileen Riley and Leo F. Leary.
In 1971, Dan graduated with a degree from Boston College School of Management. His first job out of college was with Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance as a food and beverage analyst. In 1975, he joined the General Electric Pension Fund as an analyst. In 1981, Dan was hired by the IBM pension fund, where he and his partners first met. In 1985, he and his partners spun out from IBM to form Sasco Capital in Fairfield, CT. Almost 40 years later, Dan was still part of the Sasco Capital "family" as a Managing Director.
Dan was a member of The Colony Golf and Country Club in Bonita Springs. He was a former longtime member of Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, CT, and also a member of The Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda. He was an avid golfer but loved skiing even more. He was also a collector of fine wine.
Dan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda K. Leary, and his two loving daughters, Jennifer L. Duerr and her husband Kevin Duerr of Wake Forest, NC, and Katherine (Kate) Staffey of Youngsville, NC; 6 grandchildren, Megan Duerr, Ellie Duerr, Riley Duerr, Kyle Staffey, Erin Staffey, and Nora Staffey. Dan is also survived by 6 of his siblings, Kathy Finley, Jane Henderson, Judy Harkins, Susan Nelson, James Leary, and Patrick Leary, and the late Michael Leary and Jack Leary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 6th, at his parish, Saint Leo the Great Catholic Church 28300 Beaumont Road, Bonita Springs.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Alzheimer's Association. 225 North Michigan Ave. FL17 Chicago, IL 60601 or to Hope Hospice 9470 Health Park Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.

I will remember Dan as a good person, a man of integrity, and a creative thinker with a memory like a bear trap. His ability to recall key dates and details of CEO conversations from 10 or 20 years prior never ceased to amaze me. Without Dan there would be no Sasco. I have benefited from his efforts and wisdom both directly and indirectly, and for that I will be forever grateful.

While I regrettably didn´t get the chance to work with Dan since I joined Sasco only three years ago, I heard about his intellect as an investor and, more importantly, his kindness as a person. I later learned these qualities to be true when Dan and Linda visited the office. When I first met him, he immediately wanted to be helpful and generously offered me to call him if I ever needed anything. That kind gesture made me realize that he was instrumental in creating the Sasco culture that it is today. He will always be missed.

While I also regrettably didn´t get the chance to work closely with Dan, I distinctly remember meeting him during my interviews and when I first started working at Sasco. He was clearly a driving force behind Sasco´s overall philosophy and strategy, and more importantly, he was loved by all. His legacy lives on and I am grateful I had the opportunity to meet him.

It will be hard to keep this to just a brief paragraph. Dan was sharp as a tack, witty and could remember lyrics to songs, the date the song was released and the artists name, this we all know, but his immense kindness and generosity towards me after I lost my husband will never be forgotten. And, when I moved to Milford, he pointed out alternative routes to avoid an often jam packed I95, shared with me his favorites restaurants in Milford and one time he even told me it was time to get new tires on my car. He was right, the tires were bald. He will be dearly missed.

I will always remember Dan´s work-hard, play-hard attitude. No matter how busy the trip, there was always time to fit a little something fun in. That balance often gets lost in today´s hectic world. What I will remember most about Dan, though, is when he came to visit me when I was in the hospital. He truly put people first above everything else. He cared and he wasn´t afraid to show it. I will carry that forward.

My memories of Dan will always go to our car ride conversations. Dan always had a great story and we´d end up laughing most of the way. Dan was distinguished and witty, a pleasure to spend time with, and it was clear that people, especially family, were most important to him. I was lucky to know him and work with him.
