Daniel Mangin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by West Funeral Home & Life Tribute Center - West Fargo on Dec. 27, 2025.
Daniel Joseph Mangin, age 76, died on December 24, 2025 at Sanford Hospital after a battle with pancreatic, liver, and bladder cancer. Dan was born on December 10, 1949, in New Rockford, ND to Dale and Verda Mangin. He grew up in Sheyenne, ND, along with his brother and sisters, Larry, Donelle and Patti, and graduated from Sheyenne High School in 1968. He moved to West Fargo, ND in 1969.

Dan married Verna Hanson on April 24, 1971 and they made their home in West Fargo. They welcomed two sons, Chad born in 1974 and Dustin in 1977.

Dan spent 27 years in sporting good sales at Stan Kostka Sporting Goods and Fitzharris Athletics. In 1997 he became employed with the City of West Fargo in the Water and Street Departments. Dan retired in 2014.

After his retirement, he continued to re-lace baseball and softball gloves for NDSU Athletics and Anderson Shoe and Leather. He loved watching sporting events, especially the MN Twins, NDSU Football and Basketball programs, and West Fargo School sports. Dan enjoyed his volunteer work every Wednesday at the Furniture Mission of the Red River Valley. He was always happy to help family, friends and neighbors. He spent a lot of time at his work bench in the garage and his grandkids, Myah, Lennon and Liv, knew that "Papa" could fix just about anything with Duct Tape and Shoe Goo! Dan and Verna walked four miles every day until his diagnosis and loved to play cribbage.

Dan is survived by his wife, Verna, son Chad of Fargo, ND, son Dustin (Sarah) of Horace, ND, grandkids Myah Thomas of West Fargo and Lennon and Liv Mangin of Horace, brother Larry of Louisville, CO, sister Patti (Bill) Murphy of Fargo, sisters in law, Karen Meier of Devils Lake, ND, Connie (Jim) Ortner of Sun City West, AZ, Yvonne (Lee) Olson of Milwaukie, OR, and Sandy Hanson of Sheyenne, ND, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Vernon and Elsie Dale Hanson, sister Donelle Langness, sister-in-law Becky Mangin, brother-in-law Dennis Hanson, Stan Hanson and Bob Meier and niece Jamie Iwen.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for your kindness and support during this difficult time. Please join them for lunch and fellowship immediately following the service.

Cousin Danny, we didn't get together real often, but when we did, I always enjoyed our visits. The last time was at my place in Valley City for a Mangin family reunion. My heart goes out to Verna and your kids and grandkids, and to your sister Patti. Hugs and prayers to each of you. Danny, give my mom a big hug when you see her in heaven.

I was reading my cousin Marlys Mattson“s
Obituary when I saw the sad news about Danny. I remember your family well and am sad for all the pain Danny must have been through with his cancer... And I am thinking about the rest of you living without him.

Danny was a great upper classman who always gave us younger guys the time of day. Was fun to play sports with him. Great guy!
