Daniel McKallagat Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. - Lawrence on Mar. 3, 2026.
Daniel Leo McKallagat Jr., lovingly known to most as "Pal", passed away on March 1, 2026 at the age of 81. Born on September 14, 1944 in Lawrence, Massachusetts he was the son of the late Daniel Leo McKallagat Sr. and Barbara (Brown) McKallagat.

Growing up in the Merrimack Valley, he was known as "Mac." Later in life, his nickname evolved into something even more fitting. With so many children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews (welcome to an Irish family) he solved the problem of remembering their names by calling everyone "Pal". The name stuck. Truthfully, it suited him perfectly. To know Dan was to feel like his pal.

Dan graduated from Lawrence High School where he met the love of his life, Nancy (Buckley) McKallagat. Both proud natives of Lawrence, they built a life rooted in loyalty, laughter, and love. Together for 63 beautiful years of marriage, they created a legacy that stretches generations.

Dan and Nancy raised four children: Scott Robert McKallagat and his late wife Heather (Gardiner) McKallagat of Saint Cloud, FL; Daniel Leo McKallagat III and his wife Shelagh (Degnan) McKallagat of Haverhill, MA; Amy Mildred McKallagat of Salisbury, MA; Brian Thomas McKallagat of Salisbury, MA.

He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and more nieces and nephews than you can count, all of them his beloved "Pals".

A lifelong resident of the Merrimack Valley, Dan's heart always leaned toward the water and the warmth of the beach. He cherished childhood memories at Rye Beach, and later made Salisbury, MA his home. He eventually found his second home under the Florida sun in Pompano Beach. The ocean called to him and he answered.

Dan "Pal" was a natural-born salesman. Construction equipment wasn't just his career, it was his craft. From owning his own business to finishing his career with Flygt Corporation, there were few construction companies in New England that didn't know him personally. There were few places anywhere that Dan didn't run into someone he knew, or someone who knew him. He had a gift for remembered stories, faces, and details. He made people feel important and made friends wherever he went.

Dan loved local establishments whether in Massachusetts or South Florida. A cold beer, a few good friends, some corny jokes and a well-told story. That was his sweet spot, that was where he shined.

Dans' seven siblings were his first and lifelong best friends: brothers Peter and his wife Louise; David and his wife Joyce; the late Stephen and his wife Patricia; Paul and his wife Janet; Jay and his wife Sera; and sisters Bambi McKallagat and Bari Garceau and her husband Michael. It would be remiss not to mention Bruce Burnham. Sometimes in life, we get to choose who our brothers are. In Bruce, Dan chose well. We were blessed to witness a friendship that became family.

Also, Dans' in-laws Janet (Buckley) Christenson and late husband Don; Joan (Buckley) Griffin and partner Alan Lagro; and the late Susan (Buckley) Campisi and husband Michael.

Dan leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, humor, hard work, and heart. If you were lucky enough to know him, you were lucky enough to be his Pal.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Anna Jaques Hospital for the kindness, comfort, and unwavering support they provided during this difficult time.
