Daniel J. Richgels
Oct. 23, 1918 - Dec. 15, 2023
Daniel J. Richgels, age 105, died following a brief illness on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Schmitt Woodland Hills. He had been a resident there for two-and-a-half years.
Dan was born on October 23, 1918, on a farm near Highland, WI, the son of William
and Mary (Hudek) Richgels. He graduated from Highland High School in 1935, and briefly attended Madison Business College.
Dan was married on October 9, 1940, to Rita Komurka of Muscoda, WI. Dan and Rita and their young family farmed in the Blue River Valley, in Grant County, WI. In 1953, they moved to Richland Center, where he began his career with the Richland Center Federal Savings and Loan Association.
Dan's professional accomplishments and contributions to the community were many. He began at the Savings and Loan as teller and retired in 1983 as loan officer and Board member. His dedication to helping first-time home owners secure loans included co-founding a mortgage insurance company. He served on the Richland Center Police and Fire Commission.
Dan was a devoted member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Richland Center. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and served on the parish council.
Perhaps he will be most remembered for his kindness and good nature. His positive outlook was an inspiration to many.
Family was the core of his life. He is survived by his five children: Robert (Bonnie Hines) Richgels of La Crosse, WI, Donald (Mary) Richgels of Waupaca, WI, David (Emily Kapp) Richgels of Cincinnati, OH, Mary Ann Ewing of Richland Center, WI, Julie Richgels of Verona, WI; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth; and his brothers: Patrick and Carlhis; wife, Rita; son, John Richgels; and son-in-law, Steve Ewing.
Dan's family is very grateful for the devoted and loving care given him by the staff at Schmitt Woodland Hills.
