Daniel Lee "Dan" Richmond
April 12, 1943 – January 11, 2026
Surrounded by family, Daniel (Dan) Lee Richmond, passed away at the age of 82 on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
Dan was born April 12, 1943, in
Doniphan, Missouri, to Wilfred Lee Richmond and Marjorie Helen (Gibson) Richmond. He was one of three sons. Throughout his childhood, the family lived in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
After high school, Dan enlisted in the United States Navy and served this country from 1964 to 1968. Dan was deployed on three combat tours in Vietnam and was honorably discharged on March 19, 1968.
Upon returning home from military service, Dan settled in Rawlins and Sinclair, Wyoming, where he met his future wife, Susan (Sue) Marie Soderberg of Minnesota. Sue relocated to Wyoming for a teaching position because she wanted to live the "western life"-little did she know that Dan was more than a little "western". The unlikely but well-suited couple were engaged within six months and married on December 28, 1969, in Sue's hometown of
Detroit Lakes, MN. They spent their honeymoon driving back to Wyoming where they carved out a life on the plains. They were married for 56 years and raised their two children, Steve and Jamie.
Suffice to say, Dan led a life that seemed almost cinematic in scope. After his combat service, he spent nearly a decade as the Captain of the Guards at the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, where his family lived at the captain's residence on the penitentiary grounds. A natural storyteller, Dan could hold a room spellbound with memories from his experiences in Vietnam and his work at the prison. From Rawlins, his family relocated to Riverton when his children were in elementary school. Dan worked in the oilfield before joining Fremont County School District #25, serving as Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, until his retirement.
Dan adored his family home near Kinnear. He took meticulous care improving and maintaining the property and spent countless hours, year-round, tooling around on his tractor, working on projects, and taking careful account of the hummingbirds and chipmunks that lived alongside them. Greater than the beautiful property they nurtured, Dan and Sue built a home that welcomed, loved, and treasured their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and pets. Their dogs, Shade, a German Shepherd, Moose, an English Mastiff, and Eli, a Yorkie, were loved like family throughout their lives. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew a childhood of storybook proportions, in large part, because of their Papa and Grandma's home. The kids enjoyed many adventures with their Papa, including rock hunting, sledding, and exploring on the family property. Every part of their lives was touched by their Papa's wisdom, laughter, and abiding love.
An outdoorsman and true Wyomingite, Dan enjoyed hunting antelope, elk, and deer with his family, particularly with his son, Steve. In addition to introducing his children to hunting when they were young, he also accompanied several of his grandchildren on their first hunts.
Dan was the rare person who embodied a resolute fearlessness alongside an unwavering kindness toward others. In his long and interesting life, he stood his ground under all circumstances. In equal measure, he was the gentlest and most loving man with an easy sense of humor. He loved his wife and family deeply, cherished his relationship with each of them, and protected and cared for them every moment of his life. There is no nobler legacy than that.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Richmond, of Riverton; son, Steve Richmond, and his spouse, Kristy, of Riverton, and daughter, Jamie Callaway, and her spouse, Mike Neuman, of Riverton; Grandchildren: Caleb (Olivia) Richmond of Minot, ND, Fallyn (Taurey Carr) Richmond of Denver, CO, Braedyn (Ian Etter) Richmond of Hudson, Rhett Richmond of Klamath Falls, OR, and Erin Callaway of Riverton; and Great-Grandchildren: Sawyer, Walker, and Teddy. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Mel Soderberg (AZ) and sister-in-law, Janice Vallesky (CA).
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Marjorie Richmond, and his brothers, David Richmond and Don Richmond as well as his mother- and father-in-law, Beulah and Melvin Soderberg.
According to Dan's wishes, a private memorial service will be held at a later date.
