Daniel Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 26, 2022.
Dan Woodward Smith, Jr.
One of the most humorous denizens of Shadyside has taken a turn for the worse in fact he has died. Daniel Woodward Smith Jr., age 89, left us Wednesday, August 24, 2022. With an Irish glint in his eye, all in his company knew Dan was conjuring up one of his wry quips that made him a luminary of any social gathering.
Dan, with his wife of 42 years at his side, greeted everyone with a smile, and always left them laughing. With a striking resemblance to Andrew Carnegie, a wee dram of scotch would be enough to prime Dan to break into a rendition of an Irish folksong.
Despite his prestigious banking positions, Dan had no aversion to dressing in ridiculous costumes to elicit mirth from his friends. A family photo of him with ground hog hat and oversize furry gloves to celebrate the eponymous day comes to mind.
Except for a stint brokering coal for a local mining company, Dan was in finance thoughout his life. During the Korean Conflict he was an Army lieutenant commanding a unit in the Finance Corps. Following a degree from Penn State, Dan became a loan officer rising to zone manager of Equibank. He reached the pinnacle of his career as President and CEO of New World National Bank in downtown Pittsburgh.
Upon retirement from banking, Dan entered a new career as VP of his wife s Shadyside based, Tile & Design Company building dealership relations with construction industry suppliers.
He was the beloved husband of Lenore "Lee" Knox-Smith, father of Daniel W. Smith III and Ursula Schreffler (Curt); step-father of Lynda Millstine, Laura Young (Robert), and Mark Millstine (Betsy); grandfather of Austin, Leah, Shyla and Leslie Schreffler and Hannah and Erik Millstine; brother of Jeanne McDowell Smith and the late Susan Elizabeth Smith; beloved uncle of John Andrew Rummel (Leslie Donovan).
A graveside service will be held at Blairsville Cemetery on Friday, September 2nd at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Dan s
name to www.woundedwarriorproject.org
Condolences may be left at www.mccabebrothers.com. And, for Dan s wish-- make sure every drink is full when you think of him.

Every time I think of my Dad I smile at his sense of humor...and get a tear in my eye. I miss him so much. He lived a great life with his partner in work and in play, Lee. Our hearts are heavy but full of so much love.
