Daniel “Dan” Thompson, a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, unexpectedly passed away at his home on June 30, 2025, at the age of 75.
Dan was born in Wykoff, MN on May 18, 1950 to John and Mary (Fjelstad) Thompson. The family lived in Preston before moving to Winona in 1961. While a senior at Cotter High School, Dan attended a Lewiston dance, where he met his future wife, Bonnie. The two were united in marriage for 54 devoted years.
Dan loved the outdoors, which could be seen when taking hikes with his children or hunting for various wild game and ginseng. He was active in his community, serving as the mayor of Minneiska for multiple years and also serving as the first male PTO president for his children’s elementary school. Dan loved history. His lean tall build proved to be the perfect attribute for portraying Abraham Lincoln in one of his children's classrooms and later in a local play, written by his brother Tom.
Dan was a hard-working man committed to his employment, whether it be as a millwright at Dairyland Power in Alma, WI, a manager at Fastenal in Winona, or his part-time post-retirement job working at Piper Hills Golf Course. Despite his dedication to work, he still found time to help his children with projects around their homes, play with his grandchildren, golf, and enjoy a brew at a local establishment.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie; children, Amy (Dan) Konkel, Cory Thompson, Jill (Shawn) Deitering, and Aaron (Danielle) Thompson; grandchildren, Ryoko, Neo, Nova, Vance, Serena, and Myra; great-grandchild Zayne; siblings, Patrick (Janet) Thompson, William Thompson and Peter (Jennifer) Thompson; sister-in-law, Debbie Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary; younger brothers, Tom and Jim; and in-laws, Marv and Joy Schultz.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Hoff Celebration of Life Center - Winona.
