Darla Kaye Schierling, of Salem, Oregon died Friday December 13th, 2024. Darla suffered from a brain tumor, endured brain surgery, radiation therapy, and after some time of rehabilitation and hopeful recovery she passed at her home surrounded by her loved ones.
Darla was born in Mitchell, South Dakota to Clifford and Doris Cook. She was preceded in death by her parents. Darla is survived by her husband Albert Schierling, daughter Tamara Knapke, of Salem, Or., son Frank Elliott, of Rouge River, Or., sisters Karen Cook, of Salem, Or., Darlene Padilla, of
Dallas, Or., Jean Runkle, of
Dallas, Or., Marilee Darby, of Salem Or., brothers Gary Cook, of Eugene, Or., and Ron Cook of Salem, Or.. She also has 5 Grandsons whom she adored, Darius Schierling, Tyler Elliott, Jakob Rogers, Bailey Elliott, and Oliver Dortmund.
Darla graduated from Dallas High School, class of 1967. She enjoyed playing volleyball, journalism and hanging out with her close friends. She loved to cook, bake and eat all the good things she prepared. She enjoyed decorating her home, making it a warm and comfortable place to visit. She liked to journal about family events, and projects her and Al accomplished on the various houses they lived in. She enjoyed gardening flowers, veggies, and fruit from her late home in Albany, Oregon where she totally enjoyed the outdoors, tending forest, fruit trees, flowerbeds, chickens, goats, cattle, and an unending battle with blackberries and poison oak.
Darla also loved camping. She loved sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows and sharing stories of past family adventures or where we were going on our hike tomorrow. And remember don't keep your feet too close to the campfire or you will melt your tennis shoes.
Darla worked as a retail clerk for Dolly Madison and ICB Wonder Bread and Hostess Cake. She always greeted her customers with a warm beautiful smile. She retired in 2006 to enjoy her family, friends and travel. Darla loved road trips, visiting relatives in other states, and national parks. Her and Al also traveled to Israel, central Europe, England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland. What a time we had! Darla also enjoyed her worship, church family, and fellowship at Court Street Christian Church in Salem, Oregon. A loving supportive group of fellow believers is instrumental and comforting in life and death.
