Darlene Fichtel, 90, of Fergus Falls, died Sunday, August 31, 2025.
Darlene Kristine Walls was born November 14, 1934 in Hibbing, MN to Hubert and Mabel (Hatlestad) Walls. Her family moved to rural Underwood, where Darlene attended country school. She was confirmed at Tingvold Lutheran Church, and graduated from Underwood Public School.
In 1964 she started working as a Senior Psychiatric Technician at the Fergus Falls State Hospital.
Darlene married Thomas Fichtel December 26, 1975. She then moved to Monticello, MN and worked as a Special Education Para Professional at the Anoka-Hennepin school district until retirement in 1986. At that time, she and Tom moved back to Underwood and built their log home. During that time, she enjoyed gardening, going to auction sales, refinishing antique furniture, and traveling.
She loved spending time outdoors, whether it be camping, hunting, or fishing. She loved to dance, organize family and friend get-togethers, and always was the "life of the party." Darlene and Tom spent their time between Annandale, MN and winters in Mesa, AZ. After the death of her husband, Darlene moved to Fergus Falls, MN.
Darlene is survived by her children, Cindy (Randy) Jacobson of Underwood, Candy Lake of Mesa, AZ, Colleen (Randy) Sonsteby of South Haven, Steve (Elaine) Fichtel of Minneapolis, Michael (Caren) Fichtel of Norman, OK, and Julia Tollgaard of Coon Rapids; granddaughter, Molly Kelly; along with numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Thomas Fichtel; her parents, Hubert and Mabel Walls; brother, Donald Walls, and sister-in-law, Laura Walls.
