Darlene A. Smith, 89, of Surprise, AZ, died peacefully on Monday, October 20, 2025, at her home.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Darlene will be 10:00 am Thursday, November 6, 2025, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church with Father Brian Dellaert as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West.
Darlene was born October 31, 1935, in Zwingle, IA, the daughter of Elmer J. and Florence K. (Hoffmann) Pollock. She was united in marriage to Francis N. "Sam" Smith on April 27, 1957, in Dubuque. He passed away on October 4, 1968. On November 13, 1971, she married Thomas J. Smith, also in Dubuque, and he preceded her in death on June 15, 2006.
Darlene attended Franklin School in Zwingle and graduated from Holy Rosary High School in La Motte.
Following Sam Smith's death she assumed operations of the family business, F.N. Smith Construction Company.
Survivors include her four children, Tim Smith of Spokane, WA, Terry (Anne) Smith of Spokane, WA, Julie (Lindsey Barnes) Smith of Waddell, AZ, and Lori (Tim) Miller of Pembroke, NH; five step-children, Thomas (Kathy) Smith, Jr. of Minneapolis, MN, Greg Smith of Flagstaff, AZ, Scott Smith of Dubuque, IA, Stacie (Pat) Woodward of Farmington, NM, and Brad (Debbie) Smith of Riverview, FL; 16 grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Thiltgen of Galena, IL, and Mary Ann Breitbach of Durango, IA; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and two brothers, Raymond W. and James A. Pollock.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Hospice of the Valley 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix, AZ 85014.
