James R. "Jim" Hutzell, 87, of Dubuque, passed away on October 21, 2025 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after bravely fighting Myasthenia Gravis.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm on Monday, October 27 at Egelhof, Siegert, and Casper Funeral Home and crematory, 2659 JFK rd, Dubuque. A funeral service will immediately follow visitation at 12:00 pm. Burial will take place at a later date.
Jim was born in Mason City, Iowa on May 27, 1938 to Kenneth James and Verna Jean (Cable) Hutzell. He attended Mason City High School where he fell in love with Eleanor Jean Yezek. They married on November 10, 1957, and shared 68 wonderful years together. They were blessed with 3 children, a son Kelly and daughters Shelley and Kris.
Jim worked in retail sales, mostly shoes, and in 1970 the family moved to Dubuque, Iowa where Jim opened his own children's shoe store, "Jr. Shoe Corner" in the newly built Kennedy Mall. He loved to help people and was an excellent salesman.
Jim was a loving husband and father, funny and kind, brave and tender-hearted, and supportive of family and friends. He shared his father's love of baseball and they attended many World Series games together. He coached Little League and Jr. League teams in Mason City and women's softball in Dubuque. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and sports memorabilia, going to Indy Car races, doing puzzles, and hunting for shark teeth on the beaches in Florida. He liked to golf and was a huge Caitlin Clark fan.
"Papa Jimmy" was a loving grandfather with a silly sense of humor who was always fun to be around. He loved spending time with his 5 grandchildren and 6 great grands. He loved to dance and sing, and was often the life of the party. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Jean, son Kelly (Laura) Hutzell, two daughters, Shelley (Sid) Harris and Kris (Andy) Redlinger; grandchildren, Koral, Erin, Bailey and Mason; great grandchildren, Alanna, Gavin, Lucy, Lily, Jordan, and Elliott. He is also survived by sisters, Judy Manusos, and Nancy (Dave) Gilbert; brothers-in-law, Tim (Chel) Yezek, and Tom (Tammi) Yezek; and sister-in-law Yvonne Yezek.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Pat Hutzell, father-in-law Edward J. Yezek, mother-in-law Cora Mae (Adams) Yezek, brothers-in-law; Bill Yezek and Jim Manusos, and grandson Korey James Hutzell.
Memorial may be left to the family of James R. Hutzell.
A special thank you to Dr. Aston and Maggie at Medical Associates Neurology, the nurses at Finley Hospital Infusion Center, and the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics Micu staff, especially Crystal, who provided compassionate care for Jim during his struggle with this debilitating illness. Your kindness will not be forgotten.

My heart aches for the Hutzell family. Jim was a great guy and always
lively and fun to be with. I know his family will miss his humor and all
their wonderful memories of times with him.
Hugs to dear Jean and am sorry I can't be there to hug you in person, but I'm thinking of you and sending love.

I worked for Jim at Jr. Shoe Corner after serving in the U.S.Army, and while attending The U. of Dubuque, and enjoyed learning about construction, fitting and selling shoes from Jim. I also enjoyed the company of Jean and "the Kids", because we (the employees) were treated with respect and a little sarcasm when we goofed off. But, the thing that I always laughed about was when he got nervous, Jim would twirl his wedding ring with his thumb, while twitching in his turtleneck sweater. My Condolences to Jean and The Hutzell Family. John Geisen

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was such a kind and generous man. His gift to me of "famous Joes" baseball cards is still on display in our home. Jim and Jean have ways been ageless due to their positive attitude and accepting nature. Jim, you will be missed.

Aww Jim, you will be so missed. A soulmate and loved so muchby my friend and your wonderful wife and our friend. You were always so organized at your little garage sales and sorting your baseball cards. Surely the good Lord will have you help with keeping heaven organized until we can all join you there. You blessed us all here on earth, Jeanie and the kids and all your friends. God bless all.
