Darrel D McKinzie's Story
1943 - 2025
Age 82
Brookline, Missouri
Darrel D. McKinzie, of Brookline, Missouri, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on January 14, 1943, in Bentonville, Missouri, Darrel lived a life marked by dedication to his family, craftsmanship, and service.
Darrel proudly served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1966 as an Aviation Machinist's Mate (ADR3) stationed at Moffett Field in California. His time in the military instilled in him a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence that he carried throughout his life.
Following his service, Darrel channeled his skills and creativity into entrepreneurship by founding and operating his own sign making and painting company. A true craftsman and hands-on fixer-upper, he had an eye for detail and a passion for building. One of his proudest accomplishments was transforming what seemed like nothing into a thriving mini-10-acre farm-a testament to his vision and determination.
Darrel's talents extended far beyond his professional life. He was an avid woodworker and carpenter who found joy in creating with his hands. He loved spending time outdoors camping, taking a boat out for skiing and fishing, riding motorcycles through the countryside, tending to his garden, and enjoying friendly competition at the bowling alley or around the poker table. Family game nights were a cherished tradition where laughter and love filled the room.
Above all else, Darrel was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband to Carol Jean McKinzie and a proud father of four sons: Scott Michael McKinzie and wife Mimi McKinzie; Steven Ray McKinzie (1965–1983); Stanley Warren McKinzie; and Stuart Wayne McKinzie and wife Dianne McKinzie. His legacy continues through six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who will carry forward the values he lived by.
Darrel was born into a large family as the ninth of ten children of Roy Charles McKinzie and Pearl Opal McKinzie. He was predeceased by siblings Roy Lee, Rolla Eugene, Mildred Ione, Harold Dean, Opal Louise, Reva Fern, Jackie Dale, Paul Dettro, and Shirley Ann.
A man of faith and quiet strength, Darrel leaves behind not only physical creations but also enduring memories that will be treasured by those who knew him best. His unwavering love for his family and steadfast spirit will remain an inspiration for generations to come. May he rest in peace as his family moves forward in Christ.
A Funeral Service will be held on August 6, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home located at 2001 W. Walnut Lawn St., Springfield, MO 65807.
