Darrell Bittner, 79, Bismarck, passed away at the Sanford Medical Facility in Bismarck surrounded by family on August 25, 2024 after a longtime illness. A special thank you is sent to the 2nd floor nurses and staff attending to his care.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 6, 2024, at House of Prayer, 1470 S Washington St, Bismarck.
Darrell was born to Herbert & Frieda Bittner in Lehr, ND on July 12, 1945. He graduated from Lehr High School in 1963. Upon high school graduation he attended Wahpeton State School of Science earning a degree in diesel mechanics. Darrell enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard as a Heavy Equipment operator assigned to the Wishek National Guard Armory. Darrell was Honorably Discharged from the National Guard in August 1971.
Darrell married the love of his life, Paulette Martell, on August 20, 1971 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Wishek. To this union were born two children, Brent Dean and Bryce Darrell.
After their marriage, Darrell and Paulette farmed for 10 years in the Lehr area. The family moved to Dickinson in 1981 where he was employed by Power Fuels which later became Ferrell Gas. Darrell operated a semi-truck/tank trailer combo hauling propane and numerous other hazardous liquid bulk products within ND, SD, MT and several Canadian territories. Darrell retired from Ferrell Gas in 2014 and shortly after he and Paulette moved to the Bismarck area.
Darrell was elected Post Commander of the Lehr American Legion Post. He was a member of the Bismarck Amvets and attended House of Prayer Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending his time camping, fishing and boating with his wife and family and especially his grandson, Jayden. Darrell and Paulette took numerous road trips to various points within the continental United States, and a special trip across the ocean to Hawaii.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 53 years, Paulette; sons, Brent (Rachel) and Bryce (Kristina); and grandson, Jayden Bittner, all of Fargo. He also leaves behind his brother, Dale Bittner (Leah), sister-in-law, Cheryl Martell, brother and sister-in-law, Garland & Idella Dockter, Helena MT; and Fred & Debbie Schauer; Yuma AZ, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Diana; and brothers-in-law, Vern Martell & Clinton Martell.
