Darrell Randolph “Randy” Brewer, 81, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2023.
Randy was born on October 6, 1941, in Mooresville, NC. He graduated from North Mecklenburg High School in 1959 and from Western Carolina College in 1963. He was an all-American guy who loved God, his family, and his country. He was an officer in the Marine Corps. Randy married Susan Helms in the summer of 1969, and together they began a new adventurous life together. He was also known to many as “Poppy”, a designation bestowed by his beloved grandchildren whom he adored.
Randy was an entrepreneur at heart and owned Equipment Group Leasing for years until branching into real estate and development during the 1980s. He loved most sports, but baseball was his favorite. He played from his childhood through his later years, playing for the church team, and loved coaching his children’s teams. We imagine the first thing he did in Heaven was to “suit up” for a game again, among old friends and teammates. Randy was an avid reader and was well known for writing and reciting poetry from memory. Our favorite, which fit him so well, was “I am the South,” by Paul Ott.
Randy had many friends. He was known for his big heart, generosity, quick wit, and of course, his jokes and stories. Randy never met a stranger. He had a genuine way of connecting with people and making others smile. He always left a lasting impression. Beyond family, his Sunday school group and his TKE brothers were some of the people that brought him the most joy. He prioritized what was important, and rarely missed an opportunity to spend time with family and those he loved. Randy lived a full life and has left a huge hole in the hearts of those whom he loved.
Randy attended Seacoast Church in Mount Pleasant, SC since moving there five years ago. He was previously a greeter at Taylors First Baptist where he and Susan were members for almost twenty years.
Randy is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan Helms Brewer; his daughter, Margaret "Meg" Prokopenko; son, James Matthew Brewer (Fernanda); and his grandchildren: Zechariah Prokopenko, Lauren Brewer and Logan Brewer, as well as extended family members. He is preceded in death by his father, Lester “Schoolie” Brewer; his mother, Margaret Trexler Brewer; sisters, Kathey Whitlock and Carole Vincent; and daughter, Mary Elizabeth Brewer.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 5, 2023, from 9:30 AM - 11:15 AM at Taylors First Baptist Church Sanctuary located at 200 W Main St, Taylors, SC 29687.
The Funeral Service will begin at 11:30 AM, immediately followed by burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park at Wade Hampton Blvd, Greenville, SC 29609.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CEF (please specify Good News Club), cefonline.com/donate, and Taylors First Baptist Free Medical Clinic, 200 W. Main St., Taylors, SC 29687. Flowers may be purchased at Barrett's Flowers of Taylors, SC, (864) 268-7563 .
