Darwin Larry Rewerts was born December 12, 1963, in
Waterloo, Iowa, the third of four children to Larry L. and Mildred I. (Aswegan) Rewerts. He was raised on the farm where he made many lasting memories and formed a strong work ethic that he was known for his entire life. Darwin graduated with the Aplington High School Class of 1982. He was married to Candy Zacharias on June 15, 1985, at St. John's United Church of Christ, Ackley, and the couple had two children, Kara and Matthew. Though their marriage later ended, the couple remained deeply close and lifelong friends.
In his younger years, Darwin liked to work on the farm, hunt, fix cars, and ride motorcycles. He was good at fixing things and could always find something to tinker with. Darwin loved spending time outdoors and was always on the go. He could often be found "buzzing around" in the Ranger with the dog, tending to the garden, or checking out the tractor. Motorcycle riding was his therapy, and he and Matt put many miles on their Harleys every summer. He was a regular at the Coffee Attic and was known to have quite the sweet tooth. He was well-known for his sense of humor. If you caught him with that familiar smirk on his face, you never knew what he might do or say next. He had a kind and generous heart and would do anything to help someone in need. Darwin worked at Napa Auto Parts in Iowa Falls for 37 years, serving as manager for most of that time. For Darwin, work was life, and he took pride in his accomplishments.
Darwin was a Minnesota Vikings fan and enjoyed attending games at US Bank Stadium. He liked watching NASCAR and traveled to several tracks with the kids, including Daytona, Talladega, Kansas, and many times to The Iowa Speedway. On Saturday nights he could be found at the racetrack in Boone or Webster City. Darwin loved family vacations to the beach, especially eating fresh Mahi at his favorite beachside grill in Florida, or drinking a craft brew while watching the sunset in Hawaii, although the flight was always sure to be a highlight for him. Darwin had a deep love for his children and was proud of his family; spending time with them was important to him. Sundays were reserved for church at St. John's, followed by family dinner and afternoon coffee visits with his parents. He had a heart for animals and loved spending time with his granddog and best buddy Oakley.
After a life marked by strength and courage, Darwin was welcomed into Heaven with his family at his side, in the early morning hours of January 1, 2026, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Darwin faced an extraordinarily difficult 18-year battle with cancer, and he fought with dignity until the very end. His quiet, remarkable resilience taught us time and again how perseverance and faith can carry us through life's hardest moments. He inspired us every day to never give up. His family is endlessly proud and will forever miss his steady presence, wisdom, courage, and his trademark sense of humor. Darwin is now fully healed and will continue to guide us until we meet again.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Mildred Rewerts, Aplington; his children Kara Rewerts and Matthew Rewerts, both of Waverly; his former wife and her husband, Candy and Bret Crowl, Ackley; his siblings, Audrey (Craig) Bravener, Fredericksburg, Darcy (Kathy) Rewerts, Des Moines, and Lonnie (Janelle) Rewerts, Wellsburg; several nieces, nephews; and countless friends. Darwin was preceded in death by his Father, Larry; grandparents Bill and Stena Aswegan, and Melvin and Jennie Rewerts; a niece Alisha in infancy, and his beloved cat, Shadow.
