Daryl Brubaker Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by John M. Ireland & Son Funeral Home and Chapel on Jan. 25, 2022.
Daryl Lindsay Brubaker passed from these earthly bounds into the arms of the Lord on the evening of January 17, 2022.
Daryl was born April 12, 1958, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to Regis and Joyce Brubaker. He would turn out to be the middle child of five children.
The Air Force transferred the Brubakers to Zaragoza, Spain when Daryl was 19 months old. Three years later they returned to the United States after being reassigned to Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in South Carolina. This is where he first attended a daycare kindergarten class.
The family moved about several more times, like many military families. San Angelo, Texas then to Midwest City and Burns Flat in Oklahoma before traveling overseas to Ipswich, England and finally ending up in Moore, Oklahoma where Daryl would become a very well-rounded young man. He excelled in school as his many Honor Society awards and high SAT score would attest, while also being voted Best Male Athlete and Wittiest Boy as a senior at Moore High School in 1976.
Daryl's high school wrestling coach urged him to apply for admittance into the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs. He was then nominated for the Academy by Tom Steed of the US House of Representatives and recruited by the Academy's wrestling coach, Wayne Baughman, who also coached the 1976 US Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Team. Daryl was accepted into the Academy and participated in the wrestling program. He later attended Oklahoma University and Rogers State University in Claremore, Oklahoma.
He maintained his athletic interest well into adulthood, playing golf, tennis, racquetball and softball - particularly fast pitch softball. Daryl enjoyed competing not only in physical contests, but games of knowledge and cunning strategy like Hearts, Spades and Clue or anything dealing with trivia. He would want it noted that he remained undefeated in Twixt.
Daryl enjoyed music and movies and other popular culture. He went to many music concerts, including multiple performances by his favorite, Bruce Springsteen. He liked the comedy of Steve (Pig Eye Jackson) Martin, Albert Brooks and David Letterman. This is Spinal Tap and The Godfather were among his favorite movies. He routinely kept an eye on the old Siskel and Ebert show to preview new films coming out. His baseball card collection was a passion.
Daryl was a reliable worker and was always very sociable with co-workers and patrons. He worked a variety of jobs throughout his life, including as a lifeguard, a computer operator, an umpire and a cab driver. He worked in retail and in warehouses. He even worked security at a club for a stint, though Daryl didn't drink alcohol.
He was such a gentle giant, "our favorite Saint Bernard". He had a kind, giving soul that was on display to everyone. Daryl will be sorely missed by those who knew him. His family will forever love and cherish his memory.
He is survived by his mother, Joyce Brubaker of Moore, Oklahoma, Sister Debbie Stellar of Fort Worth, Texas, Brothers David and Deron Brubaker of Moore, Oklahoma and Duane Brubaker of Oklahoma City.
Daryl was preceded in death by his father Regis Brubaker, Grandparents; Troy and Callie Cowden and Ord and Lista Brubaker. Nephew; Derek Brubaker and Niece; Terri Kimbrough.
We miss all of you.
The family will host a come and go viewing at the John Ireland Funeral Home in Moore, Oklahoma (120 South Broadway Ave.) on Wednesday, January 26th from noon until 8:30. All are welcome.
