Daryl J. Perna, 65, of
Auburn, California passed away on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at his home.
He was born on October 2, 1958, in Darby, PA to Virginia (Ambrose) Perna-Krempels of
Hagerstown, MD and the late Rev. E. Joseph Perna.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his children Joseph Perna, Alexandra Perna, brother Robert Perna, stepbrother David (Mary) Krempels, stepsister Deborah (Kevin) McAfee, and step sister-in-law Wendy Krempels.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather Rev. Robert A Krempels, and stepbrother Robert Douglas Krempels.
Daryl loved God, his family, his country, the outdoors, and sports.
Early in his working career, Daryl supervised crews in the Port of Oakland, CA, that restocked US Navy Vessels before they set sail to protect our country.
He spent the next 30-years with the California Field Ironworkers Trust, starting as a field auditor and at the time of retirement was the liaison between labor and management, ensuring ironworkers received their benefits and settled into their own secure retirements.
Daryl loved his country and appreciated the opportunities it afforded to him. He was a huge fan of "The Duke" John Wayne and believed your actions should speak louder than your words. He quietly helped others behind the scenes without talking about it or taking credit.
Daryl was a Commander in his church's Royal Rangers youth group for boys teaching critical life skills and sharing knowledge of the outdoors.
He served as a founding board member of the faith-based organization, today known as Convoy of Hope that provides disaster relief and comfort to the most needy around the globe.
Daryl was a devoted parent who actively supported his children's endeavors in sports, academics, the arts, and student government throughout their high school and college years.
Daryl played baseball for Diablo Valley Community College in
Pleasant Hill, CA. Where his team won the California State championship in 1977. He would later go on to be an assistant coach for that team following a stint in professional baseball as a player-coach in Italy.
He also served as the Junior Varsity baseball coach at his alma mater Northgate High in
Walnut Creek, CA.
He was part of numerous traveling softball teams, competing in tournaments across America.
Daryl also served as a baseball and softball umpire before a long career as a high school and college football official. He even had the opportunity to work a Stanford college game coached by NFL Hall of Fame great Bill Walsh.
He was the scoreboard and game clock operator for the San Jose Saber Cats of the professional Arena football league.
A devoted Oakland Raiders fan, he relished the spirited rivalry with his East Coast family, ardent supporters of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He seized every chance to taunt them whenever the Raiders emerged on top, adding an extra spark to their family gatherings.
Daryl had a passion for the outdoors and loved to fish and hunt. He traveled to many parts of the country in pursuit of deer, elk, duck, pheasant, and dove. In retirement, he earned his certificate as a Hunter Safety instructor.
In 65 short years Daryl influenced so many lives, and though his time was short, his impact will be long.
