Howard David Secrist

January 3, 1932 - June 8, 2025

Howard David "Dave" Secrist passed away peacefully in Carlisle, on June 8, 2025. He was born on January 1, 1932, in Millerstown, Pa., to Jacob Leroy and Lee Emma Secrist. Dave was a lifetime educator and an avid sports person. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1949, and then from Westchester State College in 1953 with a B.S. in secondary education. After college, he served in the Army for two years where he was stationed in Aberdeen, Md. He then continued his education, earning his principal's certification and a masters in counseling.

Dave worked in public education for 32 years in Central Pennsylvania, teaching geography and driver's education for 14 years, and then as an administrator for 18 years at Carlisle Unified School District. He went on to work for the Pennsylvania State Department of Education as safety education coordinator where he helped develop and implement a statewide driver education training program for youth.

Dave was involved in various community service, church, and professional organizations throughout his life and enjoyed both coaching and playing sports. He coached basketball and baseball and played baseball as a pitcher through his college years. He lived in Pinehurst, N.C., after retiring and enjoyed playing golf.

Dave is survived by his two children, Steve Secrist (Liz Schiff) of San Francisco, Calif., and Suzanne Secrist (Darrel Blackwood) of Flagstaff, Ariz./Carlisle, Pa. He was predeceased by his parents; and three brothers. Private interment will occur at a family plot in Millerstown. At a later date, a memorial service will be held at Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst, N.C.

Mr. Secrist was a senior administrator when I joined CASD. He was welcoming and supportive as I started my career in Carlisle. He was an excellent high school principal when we operated the 9-12 building separately for many years. My condolences to his family.
