David passed away February 6, 2025, surrounded by his family. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 57 years, Karen Baker; children: Jeff Baker, Steve Baker, and Stacy Foster; grandchildren: Dillon, Ian, Heather, Chasidy, Cody, Michael, Morgan, Marcus, Trey, Heather, and Holly; 24 great grandchildren and one more on the way; his brother, Don (Linda) Baker; along with many relatives and friends.
David Charles Baker was born in Lamoni, Iowa, on May 5, 1941. David's journey through life was marked by his happy spirit, unwavering love for his family, and his passion for the things he adored.
David's love story with Karen began in Cedar Falls at a bowling alley in 1966. They danced the night away to jukebox music and it was love at first sight. A year later, they were married. Their bond grew stronger over the years, and their love endured through all of life's ups and downs.
The love for travel took David and his beloved wife Karen on many adventures. They explored new places, experienced different cultures, and created countless memories together. For ten years, David and Karen made their home in Branson, where they enjoyed the vibrant community and the beautiful surroundings. They enjoyed traveling around with their Corvette club and many visits from family and friends. The kids often took vacations to Branson with the grandkids and David and Karen always made sure that lasting memories were made. In 2016, they returned to Chariton, where they still had many friends and family close. Returning to the safe and familiar surroundings where their life together had blossomed and flourished years before.
David's Hy-Vee career started in Burlington Iowa in 1964. David ended up retiring at the young age of 53. It gave David more time with his family and gave him opportunities to find new hobbies and go on new adventures. He remained proud if his Hy-Vee career and his parent's legacy of being there in a time of tremendous growth and prosperity, when it was a big "family". Many close friends and connections were made through Hy-Vee and are cherished to this day.
David lived life to the fullest, always finding joy in the little things and making the most of every opportunity. His love for golf was well known; he spent countless hours on the greens, perfecting his swing and enjoying the time spent with his fellow golfers. He played on "stag night" (Friday nights) for many years with many of his buddies and friends. He was also an avid supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, never missing a football game and cheering on his team with unwavering enthusiasm.
Family was at the heart of David's life. He was a devoted grandfather who made every event involving his grandchildren a priority. David was always there, cheering them on and offering his unwavering support. His presence brought warmth and love to every family gathering. His love for Karen was enormous and apparent. In his final years, you did not see one without the other. Karen took loving care of him until the end of his life, symbolizing their enduring love and commitment to each other.
David's passion for life, his love for his family, and his excitement for the things he enjoyed will be remembered by all who knew him. His infectious grin and twinkle in his eye when he teased you, will be something that his family will always remember with a smile.
He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his loved ones, forever reminding them to live life big and enjoy every moment. To send flowers to the family of David, please visit our floral store.
