David Barkell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Flahiff Funeral Chapels & Crematory - Homedale on Feb. 3, 2026.
David passed peacefully on January 27, 2026 at his home after a long hard-fought battle with cancer. Dave was born in Weiser, Idaho on March 12, 1955, the youngest of four children born to Warren and Phoebe Barkell. He was raised in the Weiser area helping with the farm as soon as he was able. He spent his childhood changing water, bucking hay and trapping gophers on his pony, Twinkle. His family moved to McCall where David attended high school. He excelled in wrestling and worked at the local filling station where he became quite the salesman. He married his high school sweetheart, Vicky Adams and they settled in McCall, where they had their two children, Travis Alan and Tara Anne. Dave worked at Medley Sports in McCall where he quickly became known as the kid that could sell "an icebox to an Eskimo".

Dave was always chasing the deal. He secured construction work in the Boise valley and eventually settled his family on West Pine in Meridian, Idaho. He worked for Hood Corporation, traveling all over the US and many countries building gas and oil pipeline, worked on the slope in Alaska, built condos in Hawaii and laid pipeline in Saudi Arabia. He was promoted to President of Davco Services at the tender age of 29 and brought natural gas to most of Las Vegas over his career. Under his direction, Davco provided joint trench services for Idaho Power and Intermountain Gas for many years in the Boise Valley and completed many gas plant projects for his good friend Jeff at Tesoro. In 1990, Dave and Vicky moved out to Givens Hot Springs area on the Snake River and later divorced.

Dave never knew a stranger. He made friends wherever he went and, maybe even an enemy or two. If you know, you know. He carried strong opinions and loved to be the leader of the pack, but most of all he lived life with the optimism of a young boy. He didn't waste a lot of time looking back and took more chances than a cowboy with a bottle of whiskey at the poker table.

Dave dove head long into any passion that struck his fancy, sparing no expense. He had a lifelong love for Chevy trucks and a good quarter horse. He spent many years breeding, training and selling his stock.

He met his wife Angie on a fishing adventure at CJ Strike Reservoir in 2005. They've enjoyed the last twenty plus years working a business, raising Corriente cattle, enjoying white water excursions, supporting grand kids at the arena and shooting range, chasing game birds and shooting clays, while also enjoying many fishing excursions on the Columbia River with family and good friends.

Despite his gruff exterior, Dave really had a soft heart under it all but had a hard time communicating to those he loved. Dave was truly a cowboy born in the wrong century, tough as nails but soft as a teddy bear. He guarded his heart with ferocious pride and believed every man should honor his word. John Wayne was his hero.

David was preceded in death by his father Warren and his loving maternal Grandmother Myrtle. He is survived by his wife Angie, son Travis (Becky) and daughter Tara Anne. Bonus sons Jake (Brittnie) and John (Kerri) and his bonus daughter Becca (Jon). Grandchildren Katlyn (Kody), Alicia (Kevin), Dalton, Abel, Madison, Jackson, Sawyer, Christopher and Miriam, along with 3 great grandchildren and one on the way, mother Phoebe Barkell, brother Larry, sisters Sharon and Linda, many nieces and nephews and other extended family.

Special thanks to all of Dave's special friends Harry, John, Dan, Mike and Albert for the trips, breakfasts, taxi service, visits and calls. He loved you all and I appreciate you more than you know. More thanks to the caretakers at St Al's cancer center and Harrison's Hope Hospice for your tender loving care.

Thank you to my two sons and bonus son Jon, who quietly kept things going over the last four years. Very special thanks to his sugar plumb for all the love and care you provided during his illness. I am eternally grateful for you all.
