David Barrera, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023, in Lubbock, Texas. David was born to Leonel and Lydia (Rodriguez) Barrera in Torrance, California on August 16, 1969. David moved to Whitharral in 1980. He graduated from Whitharral High School in 1987.
David, a man of unwavering commitment and dedication, spent 33 years working at Texas Department of Transportation (TX DOT). After working numerous positions, he became the Maintenance Administrator for the Lubbock District. His dedication to his work was evident in every project he undertook. In his endeavors, he touched lives all over the state of Texas. He went above and beyond to ensure that the roads were safe for everyone, he was especially passionate about educating others on seatbelt safety.
In his free time, David pursued many hobbies that brought him happiness. He loved riding his motorcycle and attended numerous bike rallies. He enjoyed mowing and doing yardwork. He loved watching sports and was a devoted Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Dodgers fan. He also enjoyed traveling and fishing. If he was not out on the field coaching, you could always find him up in the stands at his children's or grandchildren's games. Among David's proudest accomplishments were his children and grandchildren. He loved them dearly and took every opportunity to support them unconditionally. He took his role as a father and grandfather with honor and loved his family without end.
Left to cherish David's memory is his wife of seventeen years, Sundi (Pointer) Barrera; children, Alyssa (Kris) Kern, Mallory (Wesley) Barrera, Keely (Trevor) Rivers, Reagan (Matthew) Barrera, Brincent Barrera, and Aiden Barrera; grandchildren, Lincoln, Jackson, and Stevi Kern, Lennox Brame, and Kingston and Leighton Rivers; siblings, Leonel Jr (Miranda) Barrera, and Margaret (Curt) Masters; numerous nieces and nephews, and bonus children he gained along the way.
David is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Cindy Barrera.
Friends and family of the Barrera family are invited to pay their respects at the visitation that will take place on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at The Venue on Broadway in Lubbock. The venue is located at 2202 Broadway St, Lubbock, Texas, 79401.
A funeral service to honor David's life will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Southcrest Baptist Church. The church is located at 3801 S Loop 289, Lubbock, Texas, 79423. A livestream of David's service can be found at southcrestlive.tv.
Following the funeral service, David will be laid to rest at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park.
David Barrera leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, compassion, and encouragement. The impact he made on the lives of others will forever be cherished. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, collegues, and all who had the privelege of knowing him.
