George Barrera

George Barrera, a man who loved life and lived it with unmatched fullness and joy, passed away after a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, adventure, and deep devotion to his family and friends. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and cherished friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on September 3, 1944, in Saginaw, Michigan, George was the son of the late Luis and Carmen (Mendez) Barrera. He grew up with a spirit that was impossible to contain — curious, bold, and brimming with enthusiasm for everything life had to offer. He graduated from St. Andrew’s with the Class of 1962, a milestone that laid the foundation for the remarkable man he would become.

On November 21, 1964, George married the love of his life, Linda, beginning a partnership built on love, laughter, and decades of shared adventures. Together they built a family and a life that reflected everything George held dear. He dedicated 30 devoted years to General Motors, retiring proudly as a Millwright — a testament to his hardworking nature and quiet dependability.

In retirement, George truly came alive. His passions were as wide as they were wonderful: he crafted beautiful things in his woodworking shop, painted cars, carved up ski slopes with graceful abandon, and caught the wind on the water windsurfing. He roared down roads on motorcycles, pedaled through the Rocky Mountains on his bicycle, and — true to his nature — raced anything and everything he could. His love of speed, movement, and the thrill of competition never dimmed.

Behind a camera, George had a quiet gift for capturing the moments that matter. He could often be found cheering on his favorite football and basketball teams, bringing the same passion to the television that he brought to every corner of his life. But above all else, what George cherished most was time spent with the people he loved. Family gatherings, shared meals, and simple moments with friends were the true trophies of a life well lived.

For more than 15 years, George and Linda embraced the warmth of Florida each winter, becoming cherished members of a community that became a true second family. Those winter months were filled with the same spirit and fellowship that defined George everywhere he went — bonds of friendship that deepened with every season shared.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Linda; his children, George (Lee) Barrera and Ann (John) Pollard; his grandchildren, Gabrielle (Jae) Park, Hillary (Mason) Spendow, Alyssa McGrandy, Alexis (Joe) Lobeck, and Emily Pollard; his great-grandchildren, Jet, Abe, and Felix; his brothers, Bob Barrera and Bill Barrera; and his sister, Virginia Hidalgo. He is also survived by his in-laws, Sharon (Jerry) Fairchild, Pat Zielinski, George (Lynn) Kralosky, Joe Pelon, Tim Kralosky, and Mark (Lisa) Kralosky, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Carmen Barrera; his brother, Ed Barrera; and his sisters-in-law, Bertha Pelon, Betty Burnell, Dorothy Barrera, Etta Barrera and brother-in-law Mike Hidalgo.

George Barrera did not simply pass through this world — he raced through it, savored it,

and filled every corner of it with love. He will be forever missed and forever remembered.

Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Ss. Francis and Clare Parish, 12157 Church St, Birch Run, MI 48415. Rev. Fr. David J. Jenuwine will officiate with burial to follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 5700 Dixie Highway, Saginaw, MI 48601, on Monday evening from 4:00 pm -7:00 pm where a Rosary will be said at 6:30pm. Friends are also welcome to visit at the church on Tuesday morning from 10:00am until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the American Cancer Society or Ss. Francis and Clare Parish.
