David Kenneth Barrineau, 85, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Prisma Richland Hospital, Columbia.
Mr. Barrineau was born on July 22, 1940, in Clarendon County, the son of the late Doris William(DW) and Susan Emma Robinson Barrineau. He grew up on the family farm near Lake City with 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Growing and harvesting plants remained a passion of his throughout his life. He was a longtime member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church in Newberry before relocating to Columbia to be closer to his family in 2023. David received his undergraduate degree from Newberry college and later attended Western Carolina and Clemson University, where he received his masters degree and doctorate, respectively. He began his long career in education as an assistant principal at Dent Middle School in Columbia, followed by a stint as the Headmaster of Carolina Academy in Lake City. He later made the move with his family to Newberry and became the Director of Elementary Education for Laurens School District 56 in Clinton. David later took on the role of Assistant Superintendent of schools with the same district. He truly enjoyed his career and the friendships he made with his coworkers.
David made the decision to retire at the age of 67 and he never looked back. An avid golfer, he played in many tournaments around the state and enjoyed fun golf trips with his buddies. He always said that he loved the game of golf, but loved the fellowship with friends even more. Travel was also something that David enjoyed very much. He took a wonderful trip to England, Ireland and Wales with his daughters, cruised to Alaska, and spent many weekends a year with his family in Banner Elk, NC. These mountain trips were cherished because he could spend quality time with his beloved grandchildren.
David is survived by his younger sister, Elizabeth Rimmer Benton of Charlotte, NC; daughter Paige Barrineau Rowland(Greg) of Columbia, SC; son in law Ashley Mark Jones(Aggie)of Georgetown, SC; and 4 grandchildren, Abigale Katherine Jones of Greenville, SC, William Mark Jones of Clemson, SC, Olivia Paige Rowland and Nicholas Reinhardt Rowland, both of Columbia, SC.In addition to his parents, David was pre-deceased by his daughter, Susan Barrineau Jones; siblings William Jack Barrineau, Ira Bethea Barrineau, Joseph Barrineau, Lenison Barrineau Jeffers, Dorothy Elsie Barrineau, Charles Leo Barrineau, and Frances Barrineau Humphries.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at the McSwain-Evans Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. A private burial will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia.
Active pallbearers will be Hardt Rowland, Greg Rowland, Ashley Jones, Mark Jones, Steve Barrineau, Kerry Barrineau, and Thom Barrineau.
