David Benjamin Obituary

David M. Benjamin passed away unexpectedly at his home in Aurora, Ohio on July 8, 2024. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 ½ years, Ann Womer Benjamin, and daughters, Katherine Womer Benjamin (Michael Carroll) of Long Island and Johanna Womer Benjamin of DC; two darling budding golfer grandchildren, Nancy and Linden Benjamin Carroll; sisters, Elizabeth Bruneau of Worcester, Massachusetts and Susan Ploof (Stan) of The Villages, Florida; and sister-in-law, Margaret Namie (Marc) of Cincinnati; along with dear nephews and nieces. He received his undergraduate degree from Boston University and his J.D. from Case Western Reserve Law School, where he met his wife. Along with having taught there and at University of Akron Law School and Hiram College, David was president of the Aurora PERI chapter and served on the board of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. David's passions were his family, politics and golf, which he played at Canterbury Golf Club where he was a longtime member. He also played at award-winning courses around the world where he cultivated friendships and golfing partners. Born and raised in Massachusetts, David was a rabid Red Sox fan but nothing pleased him more than playing golf with his children and grandchildren and taking them for Boppa's pancakes afterward. Visiting hours will be Saturday, July 13, 2024, 12:00-1:30 p.m. at The Church in Aurora, 146 S. Chillicothe, Aurora 44202, with a memorial service following at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to golf caddie scholarships through the Evans Scholars Program, (www.wgaesf.org). David was the best golf friend anyone could ever have.I was pleasantly captivated by his infectious enthusiasm for the game and his vast knowledge of its history. He got me interested in the nuances of golf course architecture and developing a passion for finding ways to make contacts with and actually play the great golf courses of America and the world. Many of my unforgettable memories are of golfing with him at the great venues like Pine Valley Merion,Shinnecock Hills,National Golf Links of America,Quaker Ridge,Maidstone, and certainly his home club Canterbury. He undoubtedly will be fondly remembered by me and what I am sure are the numerous other golf afficianados lucky enough to have encountered him during his wonderful life.

So sorry to Ann and the rest of his family. I always enjoyed seeing David and his love for golf was infectious! He mentioned several times how much he respected my grandfather Dr. Earl Shirey. That meant so much to me. He will be missed.

Dear Ann,

Alan and I were saddened to learn of David´s passing. I knew David from law school where we soon discovered that we were alums of the same undergraduate institution; it´s unusual to find a fellow Terrier in Cleveland. David was smart, funny and kind. Alan and I regret that we will not be able to attend his memorial service but hope that the three of us can keep in touch. We both send our heartfelt condolences.

Dear Ann:
Meeting you and David was one of the highlights of my law school days. I always enjoyed the times over the years that followed when we bumped into each other or had a chance to talk on the phone. My heart hurts to think of a world without David. Unfortunately circumstances prevent us from attending the funeral but Hadley and I will be thinking of you with love in these oh so difficult days.

Dear Ann and rest of family.
I am so sorry to hear of Dave´s sudden passing.
I remember him from CWRU as someone with a big smile. He was always ready to share his interpretation of a case.
As a lawyer, he practiced law in a civil, professional manner. The earth is a sadder place without him.

Ann and Benjamin Family:
Cindy and I are deeply sorry for your loss. Dave was unique in so many ways. He was someone you could always count on. His historical perspective of Canterbury Golf Club and courses everywhere was very in-depth. I enjoyed many great conversations as we played the holes at Canterbury. He is now at peace and will be greatly missed. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. God is receiving a great person.

David was the sweetest man alive! Even when cursing at the technology I helped him with, he still ended it with a smile, an apology, and a Starbucks caramel apple cider! He will be sorely missed at Hiram!

One of my fondest memories is having David take myself and our sister to learn to golf at the Nichols College course on a very busy Sunday morning. Needless to say, we tied up play for a while until he realized how uncoordinated we were for the game. Thanks for a valuable lesson little brother. You will be missed. Much love, Bett

So sorry to hear the sad news. When we first moved to Aurora as new attorneys, David was a wonderful mentor and enjoyed the fact that I had Boston roots. Condolences to his family. He will be missed.
