It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of David M. Bergin, 82, of Westborough, on Saturday, May 31, 2025, in his home, surrounded by loved ones.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Marie T. (Pignataro) Bergin of Westborough; his loving children, Francis J. Bergin and his partner Kathryn Engberg of Worcester, MA, Vincent P. Bergin and his wife Helen of Farmington, CT , Maria R. Cotoia and her husband Michael of Sutton, MA, Jennifer M. Lahue and her husband Brian of Westborough, MA; his adored grandchildren, Nicholas and Rachel Bergin, Anthony, David, and Christopher Cotoia, Jonathan, Patrick, and Benjamin Lahue; his sister, Anne M. Reno of Lawton, Oklahoma; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his dear parents, David was predeceased by his brother, Francis A. Bergin, Jr.
Born in Worcester on June 21, 1942, David was the third child born to Francis A. and Mabel P. (Greeney) Bergin. David was a student of North High School in Worcester before enlisting in the Army at the age of 17. He completed his general education diploma while stationed in Hawaii. Following his time in Hawaii, he finished out his enlisted time in South Korea. David took pride in his service to his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army. One of his fondest memories was having the responsibility of driving Lt. Colonel Peterson. After returning home, David continued his education at Worcester Junior College where he obtained an Associates degree and then worked towards his engineering degree at Western New England College.
David was a proud sales agent, establishing his own agency, David M. Bergin and Associates. He was an award-winning sales representative in the sporting goods and apparel industry. David was an active member in the New England Sporting Goods Agents Association, Boston Shoe Travelers, New England Apparel Club, and the National Sporting Goods Association. Also, David was an honorary lifetime member of Knights of Columbus and was a 3rd degree Knight.
Beyond his accomplishments in his career, David was most proud of his family. Meeting Marie shortly after completing his service, he quickly knew she was who he wanted to spend his life with, marrying May 21, 1966. Their family grew quickly and their love exponentially. Always sharing the common goal of nurturing their children and working together to provide them with the best opportunities. They have created many cherished memories of family playing in the backyard, camping trips, beach and fishing excursions. As much as David enjoyed being a father, he truly relished the role of “Pops Dave” to his grandchildren. He never missed the opportunity to see them doing what they loved whether it was hours at an athletic field, hockey arena, gym or auditorium for a recital, you could count on Pops to be there with Mama Marie by his side.
Though David is no longer with us and we will forever miss him, we will carry him with us in all that we do. His caring heart and selfless soul are forever ingrained into the hearts of everyone who knew him.
