David Charles Berta, 82, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away on August 16, 2025. David was born on July 8, 1943, in South Bend, Indiana, to Michael and Hermina (Schohl) Berta. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, Dale F. Berta (Nona Berta) and Donald E. Berta (Joan Berta). He is survived by his niece, Marsha Berta, and nephew, Donald "Rick" Berta, along with many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his devoted companion, Catherine Daggy, who shared many meaningful years with him. David graduated from Central High School in 1962 and went on to earn a degree in education from Indiana University. He dedicated more than 30 years to teaching at Lincoln Elementary and Jackson Elementary, where he inspired countless students through science, photography, and memorable class trips to Washington, D.C. Alongside teaching, David was a gifted photographer whose work was showcased by the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, and many local schools and businesses. His photographs captured both everyday moments and milestones, leaving behind a legacy of artistry and storytelling. In later years, David was a proud and active parishioner at Little Flower Catholic Church, where he faithfully served as an usher. Though he was a quiet man in many ways, those lucky enough to know him will miss his humor, curiosity, and kindness. David's legacy was far reaching-shaped through his teaching, his photographs, and the lives he touched. Visitation will take place on Saturday, August 23 at Zahoran Funeral Home in South Bend from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm, followed immediately by mass at Little Flower Church in South Bend at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Riverbend Cancer Services, the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, or Alzheimer's Association. David will be remembered for his kind spirit, dedication to education, and the beauty he shared through his photographs.
