David Edward Campbell, a precious husband, adored father of three children and one dog, cherished son, brother, and uncle to many dog nephews, passed away with his proudest accomplishment, his family, by his side at the age of 63.
Dave was born on January 27, 1962 in Milwaukee, WI to John and Carolyn Campbell. He was the eldest of four siblings. He graduated from Benet Academy, the University of Notre Dame, and DePaul University. While pursuing his love for tax, seeking a masters at DePaul, he met the true love of his life, Karen. They went on to raise three children, building a party of five.
Dave valued his foundation: faith, family, fun, financial literacy, and Notre Dame football. Dave's faith was a steadfast principle on which he built his life. As a new couple, Karen and Dave sought out a Young Married bible study and it was transformative in their life as a couple and eventual young family. His faith informed how he carried himself through life and how he treated those around him.
His greatest pride was his family and the lifelong friends he stood beside as family in every way that mattered. Dave's desire to prioritize connection was best demonstrated in how he shared his love with his party of five. He cherished the time he got to spend on both sides of the field, coaching and cheering Megan on in her athletic ascent. He immersed himself in the unfamiliar world of water polo, faithfully following Sara's teams, so he could engage intentionally in the sport she loved most. He adapted his love of play to any medium Jack would agree to "verse" him in. Without complaint, he carried everything from diaper bags to the team in Connections, picked up every phone call, big or small, and relished in being our trusted advisor.
Dave was a master of play. He taught his children how to count using cards, dice, and the occasional wager. He built team culture with cul-de-sac softball, backyard bags, cards, board games, and the occasional world domination. Dave found the opportunity to play in every moment possible.
Drawn in at first by the family cable company, he built a career at his father's namesake accounting firm and evolved as he stepped in to run the company with his brother. The gift of a family business kept giving with lunch breaks at his parents' kitchen table, daughters turned receptionists, and a commute never too far to make it home for dinner.
Dave adored his time at Notre Dame and doubled that love by sharing it with his family, even when his eldest selected Michigan. He worked tirelessly to ensure their dream schools became a reality, believing that the lessons learned both inside and outside the classroom were among the greatest gifts he could give. He chased national titles for both fandoms, but made sure his kids knew the Notre Dame fight song before their ABCs. He passed on not only his love for his alma mater, but a value in family and tradition.
David is survived by his wife of 32 years, Karen, his three children, Sara, Megan, and Jack, his mother, Carolyn, his brother, Tom, his sisters, Susan and Beth, his sister-in-law, Ronda, and his dog, Layla. He was preceded in death by his father, John, and countless other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Business INCubator program, via the Naperville Education Foundation (NEF).
