David Lawrence Coleman, Sr., husband of Patricia Ann Matthews Coleman, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026 at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.
David was born on July 25, 1946 in Greenwood, SC, and was the son of the late James Henry and Eleanor McSwain Coleman. David devoted his life to public service and was deeply involved in the community. He worked as a U.S. Postal Carrier for over 30 years and served in many civic roles including, magistrate, mayor, fire chief, city councilman for a decade, all within the town of Cross Hill. Additionally, he was the owner and operator of Coleman’s Store and a member of the SC National Guard.
In addition to his wife of 46 years, Patricia, David is survived by his son, David Lawrence Coleman, Jr. (Erica); his sisters, Eleanor Coleman Glaze, Eileene Coleman (Sherry); his grandchildren, Nicolas Stanton Brown (Amberly), Lance Edward Godwin, II, Nishyah Simone Scott, Madison Nichole Coleman, Aubree Jade Coleman, Skylar Heavyn King, and Kiyli Angils King; his great-grandchildren, Garrison Reed Brown, Maisyn Kennedy Brown, and Raelynn Mae Wilkes; and his mother-in-law, Carolyn King.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his daughter, Christel Lynn Coleman; his brother, James Henry Coleman, Jr.; and his sisters, Virginia Coleman Dixon and Carolyn Coleman.
The family will hold a Memorial Service on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 12:00 PM at Cross Hill First Baptist Church.
We shall miss his strength, his warmth, his humor, his spontaneity.
We shall miss his white hat…he gave us the world and asked for nothing.
