DAVID DEAN Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 13, 2013.
DEAN, David H., died on August 11, 2013. He confronted a very difficult year of illness with characteristic humor, courage and strength. Dr. Dean was an Associate Professor of Economics in the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond. Although he built a national reputation for his research in the economics of disability, Professor Dean will be most remembered as an extraordinary teacher. He was a two-time recipient of the University Distinguished Educator Award and three-time recipient of the Robins School's Outstanding Teaching Award. Professor Dean's classes were characterized by an artful blend of rigor, organization and humor. The phrase "my favorite professor," was a routine reference to Dr. Dean. Outside of academe, David was a lover of music and a participant in a wide range of sports. He was an accomplished tennis player, stalwart on the basketball court and softball field, unorthodox on the bowling lane, and a later-in-life golf enthusiast. Across this spectrum of athletic pursuits, David will be remembered as a highly spirited yet delightfully affable competitor. More broadly, David was simply someone everyone enjoyed being around. To his students, colleagues, friends and family, he leaves a legacy of hard work, personal integrity, laughter and a love for everything that his life offered. David was preceded in death by Leslie, his wife of 29 years and mother of Brian and Sean. His father, Donald E. Dean, also preceded his death. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Holly; sons, Brian and Sean; his mother, Jean; and his siblings, Richard, Robert and Cathy. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 16, at 3 p.m. in the Robins Pavilion, located in the Jepson Alumni Center at the University of Richmond. A reception will follow in the same location. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Jimmy V Foundation at www.jimmyv.org.

I was at Rutgers Grad school with David. He was one of the Imperfect Competitors who always had a kind and encouraging word to say to us new graduate students. My condolences to David's family.

I'm sorry to hear of David's passing. I have many great memories of David at RU. I recall many days when he was headed off to his "union meeting," with tennis racquet in hand. One of the really nice guys and perhaps the only one who spent more time in the grad program at RU than me.

I attended Graduate school with David in the late 70s, and early 80s. I greatly enjoyed my times working, studying and laughing with him. A good time was had by all when David was around! It has been thirty years since we've talked, but his personality, his buoyancy and laughter remain memorable.

Please accept my deep condolences.

David will truly be missed. I only worked with him for one year at UR but I will never forget his great spirit both in the classroom (where I know he was dearly loved) and on the bowling alley (where he kept those meticulous stats that he revealed about all of us to our students :-)). My heartfelt condolences to his family.

I did not personally know David, but I was in room next to him on the BMT ward. I sensed a critical moment was approaching and was impressed by the attendance of loved ones who knew him so well. I wish I had the chance to know him, I rejoice at the impact he made on all those he encountered and thus his spirit continues. My deepest condolences to all who have lost David.

Dr. Dean was hands down the best professor I had at UR. He played a huge role in shaping my college experience and professional plans. I always admired his boundless energy and ability to challenge and mentor his students at the same time. Best wishes to Dr. Dean's family during this difficult time.
