David Graham Desmond

David Graham Desmond, 75, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at his home in Wilmington, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Michael Desmond and Virginia Driver Desmond. David was born February 2, 1948 in Waynesboro, VA to his loving parents, Joseph and Virginia.
He later moved to Kinston, NC with his family and graduated from Grainger High School in 1966. He made many lifelong friends during his years at Grainger High that he stayed connected with throughout his life. Shortly after high school, David joined the US Army in March of 1968. He proudly served our country overseas during war time and was honorably discharged in December of 1969. While only in the Army for a short time, being a veteran was extremely important to David. He was very active in the American Legion, serving in various leadership roles including Department Commander of the North Carolina American Legion from 1995 – 1996. Professionally, he worked at various engineering and architectural firms until retiring. David also received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the State of North Carolina's highest civilian award, in March of 2000. David was also an avid Nascar fan. He could often be found watching the race on tv and attended many races live while working with various veteran groups. He loved the simple beach life and moved to the coast after retirement. He enjoyed going to local beach music festivals with friends.
David always put his family and friends first in life. He was a doting grandfather and he loved to spoil his two granddaughters any chance he got.
David is survived by his son, Grae Desmond (Leslie) of Raleigh, NC and granddaughters Finley and River; sister Beverly Davis of Greenville, NC, sister Terry Smith (Jimmy) of
Emerald Isle, NC, and brother Mike Desmond (Melissa) of Midlothian, VA, along with two nieces, a nephew, several cousins, and numerous close friends.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 4,2024 at Howard-Carter Funeral Home in Kinston, NC.
