David DeVeny Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Coker-Mathews Funeral Home on Oct. 10, 2025.
David Richard DeVeny passed away peacefully at his home in Greenville, Texas, on October 8, 2025, at the age of 63.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel of Coker-Mathews chapel with Rev. Brian Bosworth officiating. Burial will follow at Memoryland Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Born on September 14, 1962, in Phoenix, Arizona, David was the beloved son of Patricia and Leon DeVeny. From a young age, he was active in his community, participating in Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, and Little League Baseball. In high school, he played both tennis and trumpet and it was during these years that he developed a lifelong love for music.

David's love for music was intrinsic to how he lived his life. A primarily self-taught guitarist, he played passionately and never stopped learning. His knowledge of gear and instruments was extensive. He played all types of music but his heart and devotion were with the rock n rock of the 70's. He considered music to be a precious gift and a blessing. Dave - as his close friends called him - was truly a musician for music's sake.

David graduated from Greenville High School and went on to study at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

David married Sherry Faulkner in 1988, and together they had one daughter, Shannon Nicole DeVeny. He was also a proud grandfather of Shannon's two sons, Ethan and Theo Maurer.

In 2006, David moved to Brownwood and began working at Barr Fabrication, where he helped create equipment for the oil and gas industry before quickly transitioning into the company's wind energy division. After many years in that industry, he returned to Greenville in 2020 with the love of his life, Amy Watson.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia Alexander DeVeny; his daughter, Shannon Maurer (Felipe); his sister, Dianne DeVeny; his aunt, Sue Ann Harting; his grandsons, Ethan and Theo and many cousins and close friends.

David was preceded in death by his father, Leon Richard DeVeny; his grandparents, Mary Sue and Sam Alexander, and Betty and Joe DeVeny; his uncle Gene DeVeny and, most recently, Amy Watson.

David will be remembered for his warm heart, generous spirit, deep love for his family, and his lifelong compassion for animals, including the dogs, cats, and many reptiles he lovingly cared for over the years. His kindness, quiet strength, and gentle soul touched everyone who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to an animal shelter of your choice in David's memory.

My prayers go to all of David's family and friends! He was an excellent member of our GHS graduating Class of 1980, and I have fond memories of playground fun with him during our years at Travis school! I'm thankful he was able to live life well with joy in his hobbies and family!
