HEUVELTON -Funeral services for David John Downing, 72, of Heuvelton, NY, will be held on Friday, October 3rd, 2025, at Frary Funeral Home in Ogdensburg at 2 p.m. with Rev. Paul Dettmer officiating. A visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family at a later date. David passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on September 28, 2025.

Arrangements are under the direction of Frary Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Ogdensburg.

He was born on August 27, 1953, in Ogdensburg, NY, the son of the late Harvey and Frances (Dane) Downing. David grew up in Macomb and was a graduate of Heuvelton Central School. He went on to attend Canton ATC. David worked on the family farm in Macomb until its sale. He then worked for Stella Cheese in Ogdensburg and later at Hood in LaFargeville. On December 1, 1973, David married Debora J. Garrison at the Macomb Wesleyan Church, with Reverend Redstone officiating.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Debora, and his daughters: Stacey (Scott) of Richville, NY, Colleen (Thomas) of Massena, NY, Kristy (Juan) of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by his niece, Jodi (Fred) Upshaw, of New Mexico.

David was a proud grandfather to Brooke, Dia, Paige, Kaitlyn, and Sophia, and a cherished great-grandfather to Marilynn, Aliya, Harvey, and Phoebe. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Frances Downing, his brother Gary Downing, his sister-in-law Judy Garrison, and his niece Sandra Downing.

David will be remembered most for his unwavering devotion to his wife and family. He had a deep love for nature and the outdoors, and was known for his quick wit and great sense of humor. David had a quiet bond with animals, who always responded to his gentle nature. One of his favorite pastimes was going fishing with his granddaughters-though he often spent more time helping them bait hooks and get ready than he did fishing himself.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the second-floor nursing staff at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, especially to David's favorite physical therapists, Jennifer and Chelsea - your support meant more than words can express. A special thank you to Hospice for your care and compassion, and to Dr. Kyung at the Claxton Cancer Center for your kindness and support throughout David's journey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heuvelton Fire Department.
