David Dunaway Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 3, 2025.
David Wayne "Scooter" Dunaway
January 26, 1965 – November 1, 2025
It is with tremendously heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of an extraordinary man, David Wayne "Scooter" Dunaway, who was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 1, 2025.
Born on January 26, 1965, in Richmond, Virginia, Scooter was the beloved son of the late William Melvin Mahan and Ruth Allene Dunaway. From an early age, he was known for his hardworking spirit, strong character, and an unshakable dedication to helping others. A true handyman at heart, there was never a problem too big or small for Scooter to tackle-especially if it meant lending a hand to someone in need.
Scooter's personality filled every room he entered. Charismatic and quick-witted, he was known for his humor, warmth, and the way he could make anyone smile. He loved people deeply and lived his life putting others first. Above all else, Scooter cherished his family. He adored his wife, children, and grandchildren-never missing a single game, event, or moment spent together. Whether it was taking his grandsons hunting or simply sharing stories, he created memories that will be treasured forever.
Scooter's dedication extended far beyond his home. He proudly served his community as President of the Northumberland Farm Bureau, President of the Northumberland Young Farmers, and as an active member of the Bauman Masonic Lodge, where he was a former Worshipful Master. His leadership and kindness left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Scooter was looking forward to retiring so he could turn his attention to one of his true passions, farming. He had a deep love for being in some of the beautiful open fields in his beloved Northern Neck community. He had been farming his whole life part time and wanted to transition into farming full time. He made countless "farming buddies" that he had special connections with and his family knows how much they will miss him. One of his absolute favorite places to be was on a tractor or in a combine.
He shared 41 beautiful years of marriage with the love of his life, Angela "Angie" Jett Dunaway, and together they raised two children who were his greatest joys, Jessica Swann (Jordan) and David Dunaway. He also leaves behind four beloved grandsons: Dominic, Brenden, Bladen, and Nathaniel, who were the lights of his life.
Scooter is also survived by his brothers and sisters, each of whom he loved dearly: Charles "Fuzzy" Dunaway (Helen), Dennis "Turtle" Dunaway (Kimberly), Kenny Dunaway (Diane), Michael "Hardshell" Dunaway, Carol "Sissy" Balderson (Norman), Patsy Bryant, Brenda Weston (Eddie), and Linda Newman (Paul). He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Melvin; his daughter-in-law, Sonya Dunaway; his nephews, Jacob Dunaway and Donnie Smith Jr., and his grandbaby, Benjamin Swann.
Having Scooter as a husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend was a true blessing. His laughter, generosity, and love will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
A funeral service celebrating Scooter's life will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church, with Reverends Kori Kiss and Danny Maupin officiating. Family and friends are invited to the visitation held from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
