David James Early

David James Early, age 78, of Dexter, MI, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on September 5, 2025.
Born on April 18, 1947, in Detroit, MI, David was the son of Leo James and Lavina Viola (Stoltman) Early. In 1974, he married Joanne Muenchausen of Royal Oak, MI, in a private ceremony in Northville Michigan. The couple later settled on a farm in Dexter, where they lovingly raised their four children: Kevin, David, Jeremy, and Meghann.
David proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he began a long career with Wayne County, retiring in 1997 as a Sergeant with the Detroit Metropolitan Airport Fire Department.
An avid fisherman and passionate history enthusiast, David embraced retirement by exploring the outdoors and traveling extensively. He and Joanne shared countless road trips across the country, often seeking out historic landmarks, secluded trout streams, and old-growth forests.
Affectionately known as "Big Dave" or "Pa Early," he was cherished for his sense of humor, infectious laugh, and generous spirit. He was a devoted fan of the Detroit Red Wings and enjoyed watching sports, in particular ice hockey. While raising his family, he spent much of his free time restoring their farmhouse, attending his children's events, and adventuring through Northern Michigan. He enjoyed listening to Bob Dylan and treasured fishing trips with family, friends, and his brothers from the fire department.
Above all, David was deeply devoted to his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Joanne; his children Kevin (Shannon), David (Krista), Jeremy (Kasey Abbott), and Meghann (Brian) Hoeft; and his grandchildren Julie, Teagan, Aiden, Landon, Bella, Kera, Wyatt, Lucas, and Joey. He is also survived by his brother John (Wendy) Early; sister-in-law Susan Early; brothers-in-law Rick (Gege) and Gary (Pam) Muenchausen; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers Dennis and Leo Early, daughter-in-law Robin, and brother-in-law Eugene (Nancy) Muenchausen.
Visitation will be held at Frazer Funeral Home, 21001 Pontiac Trail, South Lyon, MI 48178, on September 20th from 12:00 – 3:00 with Military Honors beginning at 3:00PM.
