David Bruce Engle, 79, of Pikeville, Kentucky passed away at his home in
Indianapolis, Indiana on April 7, 2025. David was surrounded by his family during his last couple of weeks of life and was able to share words of love and encouragement with all.
David was born in August, 1945 in Pikeville, Kentucky to Bruce and Edith Engle. He spoke often of hunting and playing in the mountains of Kentucky or fishing in Chloe Creek when he was young. He was a hard worker, even as a child, helping his parents on their farm. David graduated from high school, and then joined the US Marines where he served in Vietnam. Though proud of his service, he did not want any fanfare or accolades for it and often struggled with the memories of war. David attended college for a while, and worked as a tech in a local hospital. Later in life, he worked as a mechanical engineer, where he thrived. Working at Mitchell and Scott, and then ELMCO Engineering, he prided himself on his attention to detail and quality work. He was admired by his peers and leaders and was often called upon to troubleshoot issues that no one else could solve.
David was also a very spiritual man, and could quote many scriptures -- from both the Old and New Testaments -- from memory. He would often use stories from the bible to connect with his family's problems and uplift them. His faith in God provided comfort as he struggled with many health problems throughout his life. Several years ago he wrote, "Grieve not for me when I am gone, for I have lived in the light of His forgiveness." He believed something wonderful was waiting for him "on the other side."
David will be most remembered for his unwavering love for his family. Being a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather fulfilled him in a way that nothing else could. His family will fondly remember the fishing trips; vacations to Kings Island, Prince's Lakes and Santa Claus, Indiana; going all out for Halloween and Christmas; and his practical jokes. Most of all, they will remember his dedication, pride, love, and support.
David is survived by his wife, Judy Engle, and his children, Mary Burton (Thomas), Jonathan Engle (Jennifer), Amanda Engle (Josie), and Teresa Bogert (Roy), as well as his grandchildren James, Eric, Adam ("Madman"), Cassella ("Cassie"), Gabrielle ("Gabby"), and Rose, and by his great grandchildren, Adelaide, James, Wyatt, Asher and Phoebe. David was preceded in death by his brother. He continued to be a loving and devoted brother to his sisters. He has many nephews and nieces.
