I was/am one of Dave Fox's Alpha Tau Omega fraternity brothers at the University of California at Berkeley. I was also one of Dave's fellow "laundronauts" during our vaunted laundronauting feat. Both Dave and I survived exactly 2,000 revolutions in laundry dryers in a laundromat located on Hearst Avenue, just west of Euclid Avenue, on the north side of the Berkeley campus during February 1963. There were actually three of us who made the laundronauting attempt, but the third guy (it was either Nick Knueppel or Willie Thurlow -- I'd have to check my records to be sure which) made the mistake of eating lunch before we made our afternoon attempt at laundronauting, and he got an upset stomach somewhere around the 1,200th revolution, and had to terminate his participation. Dave and I then went on to break the the then-World-Record of 1,151 revolutions, which had been achieve the previous week by another Cal-Berkeley student. Our dryers were adjacent to each other, and so we could talk to each other while we were going around in the dryers. We finally decided among ourselves that we'd both stop at exactly 2,000 revolutions, so that we would be co-holders of the so-called World Record for Laundronauting. I believe Dave spent a total of 56 minutes and 20 seconds in his dryer, while I, being slightly heavier than Dave, spent a total of 56 minutes and 40 seconds in my dryer.
Years later, (1973-74) when I was working in the Union Bank Building in downtown e Angeles, Dave worked in the same building. Every Friday, I would cash my paycheck in the bank on the first floor of the building. Often, Dave would be there for the same purpose, and would have a friend in tow, and he would walk up to me, and simply say, "Steve, how many revolutions?", and I would respond, "2,000", whereupon, Dave's pal, with a look of shock on his face, would slowly pull out his wallet and hand over the Dave whatever amount they had wagered that Dave's "laundronaut" story was truthful.
