David Genger Obituary

Published by Antioch Review from Jun. 24 to Jul. 1, 2010.
Genger, David
David Genger, age 47, of Lake Bluff passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Wednesday, June 16th. Dave was born September, 17th 1962 and grew up in Warrensville Heights and Shaker Heights, OH. Dave's father, David, Sr. was a corporate attorney who practiced law for 38 years in Cleveland and retired as a partner with the law firm of Arter and Nadden. His mother, Nancy, was a long time, revered teacher and learning development specialist in the Shaker Heights school system. Dave's brother, Mark, is Manager of Finance with Fleet Response, an accident management service provider in Cleveland, OH. Dave graduated from Shaker Heights High School and Wooster College, where he met his soul mate and wonderful wife, Vanessa. Dave and Vanessa have three beautiful daughters: Melissa, 21, Coley, 19, and Allyson, 17. All three girls graduated from Lake Forest Country Day School, and Melissa and Coley graduated from Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, where Allyson just completed her junior year. Melissa just finished her junior year at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA, while Coley just finished her freshman year at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA. When Dave and his family moved to Lake Bluff thirteen years ago, he joined the faculty at Lake Forest Country Day School as Chair of the Science Department. From the beginning of his time at the Day School, it was clear that through his own passion for science and the teaching of science, he motivated students to share his excitement for the work they were doing together. He truly had the pied piper charm as students were drawn to his charismatic personality and his humorously divergent manner of thinking. His infectious laugh and playful demeanor inspired wonderful relationships with children. His creative development of curricular ideas, the integration of technology into his science classes, and his emphasis on innovative science projects also made him a favorite among students. For the past three years, Dave has served as the Head of the Upper School, a position which won him universal respect from students, his faculty, and his administrative colleagues. A multi-dimensional interdisciplinary thinker, Dave loved to challenge those around him to grow to their fullest potential. All of us at LFCDS were enriched by his presence and inspired by his leadership. Dave had just recently been named Head of School at the Rio Grande school in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was to have started this new position on July 1st. A memorial service was held on Tuesday at the Woodlands Academy Chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to the scholarship funds, in memory of Dave Genger, at Lake Forest Country Day School, 145 South Green Bay Rd. Lake Forest, IL 60045, Attn: Sarah Thomas and Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, 760 East Westleigh Rd Lake Forest, IL 60045, Attn: Laura Curley.

Always a happy and decent soul that was a quiet but powerful presence for the Class of 1980 of Shaker Heights High School.

I was part of the Wooster in Vienna Program many years ago, the same summer David and Vanessa went and I was saddened to read of his passing in the Wooster magazine. While I did not know him well, I just remember how funny he was and how kind he was to everyone. I just remember sitting in a beer garden, outside Vienna, laughing. That was a good summer. I pray for Vanessa and her three daughters. I went on to have 6 sons and live in Wheaton, IL. Small world. Again, I am so sorry. -Katie English Reinhart '85

I'm so sorry to just be hearing of David's passing now. I was a student of his at US and his love of science and teaching and just generally being a good person was an inspiration to me then and now. My childhood dog (Moses) was from your families litter and I have such fond memories of the dogs playing together and hanging out with Mr Genger. My sincerest condolences to you all, but know that David had a profound impact on my life and will always be remembered.

I was greatly saddened to learn a few days ago from fellow Wooster alums of Dave's passing. I was Dave's roomate at Wooster at Kenarden Lodge and at Slater House. Dave was a great roomate and a one of a kind individual- he possessed a unique and hilarious sense of humor (I credit him with making me a lifelong David Letterman fan). My thoughts and prayers are with Dave's parents, and with Vanessa, Melissa, Coley and Allyson.

Oh my God, I'm in shock. David was a great man and a phenomenal educator. I remember talking with David about his projects and students and he always brought more passion and energy than I ever remember getting from my own teachers, and I had pretty good teachers. My deepest sympathies to Vanessa, Melissa, Coley and Allison. You are in my prayers.

Dave was our favorite junior high teacher, and the single best teacher any of our children knew. He loved teaching science and did it well; he was encouraging, supportive, and wise.In addition, he was a supportive friend to other parents. We were so happy for him when we learned that he would have his own school in Santa Fe and felt it was well-deserved.
We embrace and support his wife and daughters in their journey without him, but are confident they will do well because of their life together.
With love and understanding,
Jeannie, Jim, Jessica, Zach. Chris Barton

Dave was a good friend to Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart and to me. He was a passionate educator and a very devoted father. On this Fathers Day, Dave stands as a reminder of what each father is called to be. He remains alive in our hearts.
