David Greene, 87, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, leaving a legacy of devotion, faith, and love.
Born in Pawtucket in 1937, David was the son of the late Francis "Frank" E. Greene and Ella M. (Williams) Greene. His journey of service and faith began at Our Lady of Providence Seminary, where he pursued his calling with steadfast devotion, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1959. His compassionate heart led him to serve as a camp counselor the summer after graduation-a role that forever shaped his life. It was there that he met his great love, Sheila Dunphy. They married in 1961 and went on to share 64 years together. David furthered his education with a Master's Degree in Education from Rhode Island College in 1963. Together, he and Sheila built a life deeply rooted in love, family, and faith.
David proudly served in the Rhode Island National Guard during the Berlin Crisis before dedicating himself to a long career in education. As an elementary school teacher in the East Greenwich Public Schools, he touched countless lives. His classrooms were filled with kindness, curiosity, and encouragement, inspiring generations of students to reach their full potential.
Above all, David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was very involved in the community. He coached his children's sports teams and volunteered at Our Lady of Mercy Parish in East Greenwich. He is survived by his daughters:
Mary Ellen Greene and her partner, John Kim Houghton; Catherine McCarthy and her husband, Paul McCarthy, along with their children, Elizabeth and Aidan; Patricia Placido and her husband, Patrick Placido, along with their children, Caitlyn and Connor.
He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Ging, and her husband, Edward Ging, of Pittsburgh, PA, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Greene, whose memory remained close to his heart, as well as by his brother John "Jack" Greene and his wife Virginia, and sister, Dorothy Greene.
Those who knew David will remember his quiet strength, gentle humor, and deep devotion to family and faith. His values live on through his daughters, grandchildren, colleagues, and the many students whose lives he shaped.
The family invites friends and loved ones to honor David's memory at a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Saturday, September 20, at 11 AM at Christ the King Church in Kingston, RI. Burial will be held at a later date.
In David's memory, contributions may be made to Meeting Street School, 1000 Eddy Street Providence, RI 02905, a place that held special meaning for him.
