David J. Hartman, age 88, passed away the morning of Wednesday, July 16, at his home in Snellville, Ga. David was born in Scranton, Penn. on October 2, 1936, where he spent his childhood summers exploring the woods of the Pocono Mountains. His family later moved to Buffalo, N.Y.
In his late teens, he served on a pit crew for stock car racing team legend "Doc Hoctor", and he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.
He married Marilyn in 1961, and the couple moved to Alden, N.Y., where they raised their family. David managed a food distribution center for Peter J. Schmitt Co. in Buffalo for 30-plus years before moving to Snellville, Georgia in 1993, where he continued his career with Kraft Foods.
After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling, including trips to Costa Rica, St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands, Alaska, Florida and the North Georgia mountains. He and his family frequently vacationed on Fripp Island, S.C., where he loved cruising around on a golf cart.
David was a happy person and had a great sense of humor; he was always ready with a joke. He loved spending time with family, having a glass of port, and going to the beach and out to dinner. His favorite pastime was watching Atlanta Braves baseball, the University of Georgia Bulldogs, YouTube videos and his longtime favorite TV show, "Star Trek." He loved music and would play it loud; blues and country were his favorite. He could sometimes be heard singing a gospel song and knowing all the words.
David is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn; daughters, Gayle Hartman of Snellville and Nancy Hartman of N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Gail Calhoon of Cheektowaga, N.Y.
He dearly loved his family and was greatly loved by them! A private family memorial service will be held in his honor.
