David Heym Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 3, 2024.
David R. Heym, aged 93, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024. He was born on March 24, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Norman and Eleanore Heym. David married the love of his life, Jean Elizabeth Davidson, with whom he shared many cherished years.
He was the devoted father of Wayne (Kimberly), Douglas (Debra Huff), and Christine (Gordon) Michael. David was a dear brother to Alison Hubbard-Miller, a proud grandfather to Heidi (Alex Hall) Michael, Elizabeth Heym, and KT (Van) Vandergriff, a great-grandfather to Penelope, an uncle to Paul (Maureen) Hubbard, and a grand-uncle to their sons, Andrew, Dennis, Patrick, and Thomas.
He was proud to have graduated from Parma High School and Hiram College and faithfully attended the alumni get-togethers over the years. He served in the U. S. Army for two years, concluding with a post in Heidelberg, Germany, ending in 1956. After his service, he began teaching mathematics in junior high school in Cleveland, Ohio, but an advertisement drew him to a career as a computer programmer. N.A.S.A.'s Lewis Research Center in Cleveland advertised it would teach mathematically inclined people to program computers. Subsequent positions were with Chemical Abstracts Service in Columbus, Ohio, from 1966, and Manufacturer's Bank in Detroit, Michigan, from 1977.
His response to God's love found expression in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). His first church home was with Franklin Circle Christian Church in Cleveland, OH. When the family moved to Worthington, OH, they were active at Karl Road Christian Church in Columbus OH. After moving to Southfield, MI, he became a long time member of Central Woodward Christian Church in Troy, MI.
In his younger years, he played softball with work colleagues and, later, church men. Before moving to Michigan, he belonged to the Lions club in Worthington OH. For over 40 years, he played table tennis at the German American Club. He loved taking pictures and enjoyed putting together travel slide shows for family and friends. He loved vegetable gardening providing an abundance of tomatoes each year. David and Jean were avid square dancers, enjoyed camping and international travel, were orchestra concert season ticket holders, and participated in church groups.
A memorial service to honor David's life will be held at Central Woodward Christian Church in Troy, MI on Sunday, December 8, 2024 after the regular weekly church service from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Friends and family are welcome to attend the luncheon beginning at 12 noon with David's memorial service following at 1:00 p.m.
