David Baynham Hiley

David Baynham Hiley passed away peacefully at his home in Vero Beach, Florida on June 30, 2024, surrounded by his wife, Gail, and six children, Michael, Raymond, Richard, Jeffrey, Sage, and Ashlyn.
David was born in Summit, New Jersey in 1938 and grew up in Chatham NJ. He went on to attend Dartmouth College (class of 1960) and Tuck School of Business (class of 1961) receiving a Bachelor's degree and an MBA; completing both in five years. He remained a dedicated supporter of Dartmouth throughout his life, the college having instilled in him many of the characteristics and traits he held dear. He was a member of the Alpha Delta fraternity and the Dragon Society.
After graduating, he served in the Army stationed at Fort Dix in the early 1960s achieving the rank of Captain. David entered the financial industry in the mid-1960s, where he had a long and distinguished career. Most of his professional life was spent at Thomson McKinnon Securities where he was the youngest board member in the company's history. He served as a director of Thomson McKinnon Securities as well as CEO for Thomson McKinnon Energy Management Inc. Later in life, he did consulting work and served on a number of boards for companies including Nortek Inc, Resources Development Foundation, Eagle Shipping, Koger Equity, and CRT Properties. He also served as President of Best Plumbing in Fabriano, Italy. Though he "retired" multiple times, David remained engaged in the financial world well into his eighth decade of life.
David also pursued a number of philanthropic efforts in addition to Dartmouth, frequently donating to New London Hospital, The Cleveland Clinic, the Alzheimer's Foundation and the ALS Foundation. While he also donated to many other charities, the institutions listed above were the most meaningful to him, in particular the ALS Foundation.
David wed Abigail Benson in August 1967, and they remained happily married for 57 years. They were each other's source of strength based on a lasting partnership and abiding love. Over the course of their marriage, David appreciated living in the beautiful homes created by his wife Gail in Manhattan, Bedford, and Katonah NY, New London, NH, and Vero Beach FL. They travelled extensively, visiting six of the seven continents over time.
His passions were his family, friends, golf, skiing and bridge (perhaps not always in that order), which he approached with spirit, dedication, and enthusiasm. His love of golf was displayed by spending most weekends on the beautiful and challenging greens of Winged Foot Golf Club. He also enjoyed playing at Bedford Golf and Tennis Club, Baker Hill Golf Club and Quail Valley Golf Club. David was also an accomplished bridge player reaching the level of Bronze Life Master.
Above all, David's children were his pride and joy. He instilled in each of them the values of integrity, wit, grace, humility, kindness, tenacity, curiosity, and courage; ones he embodied throughout his life. His children strive to follow the example he set, while teaching their children/his grandchildren – Alexa, Ethan, Nicholas, Megan, Alexandra, Emma, Rachel, Caitlin, Tessa, Davis, Liliana, and William – these same virtues. His family has fond memories of many ski trips and reunions which he organized with excitement and enthusiasm. What his family will remember most, however, is his unwavering dedication to each of them, dropping whatever he was doing at a moment's notice to be by their side when needed. Despite his many accomplishments, David would most like to be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and colleague. Those that knew him will miss him deeply though his legacy will endure.David is predeceased by his parents Reginald and Edith Hiley. He is survived by his beloved wife, six children and their spouses, as well as his 12 grandchildren. Should anyone wish to honor his memory, in lieu of flowers, the family would request that donations be made to the ALS foundation in his name. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The entire family is grateful for all the messages of love, support and memories shared since his passing.
