David L. Hoffberg, loving husband and fabulous father passed away on Sunday, January 30, 2022. He was 90 years of age.
Born in New York in 1932, David attended high school in Malverne, NY, received his undergraduate at Cornell University (1953), and graduated from NYU law school in 1955.
In 1957, David moved with his young family to Rochester, NY and joined Nixon, Hargrave, Devans & Doyle and made partner in 1965. He later held senior leadership positions with the firm until his retirement in 2000, including member of the Management Committee, Chairman of the Operations Committee, Chairman of the Litigation Department and then Litigation/Administrative Law Section, and Member of the Partner Evaluation Committee.
More people than can be counted thought of him as a teacher, coach, and mentor. This was true of professional colleagues, athletes, students, and friends; it was true of young men and women and people his age and older. He was especially proud of the role he played in recruiting women to Nixon Hargrave at a time the profession wasn't known for such things.
David began his involvement with The College at Brockport in the late 1990s. After his first retirement in 2000, he combined his deep commitment to and interest in ethics with his love of teaching to create a seminar in the Honors Program on Professional Ethics. He taught until he retired again in 2013. During this time, he also served on the Strong Memorial Hospital Ethics Committee as well as the Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation.
David believed in citizenship. He served on countless boards that advanced the interests of his alma mater, women's health, Democratic politics, and the YMCA (to name a few). He was active (to put it modestly) in the Bar association at local and state levels and a broad sample of professional groups, most significantly in his mind, serving as a member of the Judicial Screening Committee for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.
Geva Theater held a special place for David. Starting in 1978, he served multiple tours on the board, was Board President, and was a driving force in raising the funds that made possible the move to the lovely and historic current building. Few have matched his dedication and commitment to Geva over so many years.

A man who was known for his kindness and grace, David is survived by his wife Gwendolyn, his sons Kevin and Eric, his sister Jane, and his three grandchildren, Jo, Jake, and Jace. They love and miss him terribly and feel blessed to have been part of his life and to have had him be such a big part of theirs.
The time and place for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
