Deborah Hoffberg Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by N.H. Scott & Hanekamp Funeral Home on Mar. 1, 2026.
Deborah (Debby) Goldmann Hoffberg, born March 23, 1953, passed in her home in the embrace of her children on January 30, 2026.

Mother of Aaron (Amy) Hoffberg and Jayme Hoffberg. Adoring Grandma to Jacob and Max Hoffberg and many four legged grand pets. Preceded in death by her loving Husband, Buff, of 34 years in 2016.

Daughter of the late Morton and Doris-Jane Goldmann. Oldest sister to Jory Goldman, Erica Rogina, Leslie (Angel) Goldmann-Franco. Aunt to Seth (Alana) Goldman, Jessie (Max) Scherzer, Eli Goldman, Marissa (Ben) Feis, and Jonah Goldman. Great Aunt to Oliver and Sebastian Goldman and Orly Scherzer

As a nurse, and especially as a Hospice Nurse, Debby led a life of care for those who needed it the most. She was intelligent beyond compare, logical, and deeply thoughtful. What she lacked in stature, she more than made up in intellect and reason. She had an insatiable thirst for reading. Her writing was immersive, stemming from a magical vocabulary and grammar (which she enjoyed correcting). The articles she read and shared along with her essays carefully crafted will be deeply treasured. She had a deep love and respect for her neighbors, friends, and book club members Marji (David) Getz-Sheftel, Cindy (Lowell) Derdiger, Lisa (Harry) Kramer, and Amy (Mitch) Greenwald.

We are so thankful for her caregiver, Laila. Her loving care for Debby over the last two years gave us all cherished time that we wouldn't have otherwise had.

Lewey body dementia took so much away from her far too soon but her subtle humor, immersive love, and unconditional support never wavered.

A Memorial service is planned for this summer, as she hated the Chicago winters.
