David Hoffman Obituary

David Jason Hoffman

June 24, 1959 – February 3, 2026

David Jason Hoffman passed away on February 3, 2026, in Wheaton, Maryland, surrounded by close friends, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 66.

David grew up in Maryland in a lively, chaotic, and loving home alongside two older sisters and two younger sisters. The house was always full of noise, laughter, and an ever-changing collection of pets, including dogs, a cat, a bird, and even a turtle (her name was Myrtle, of course). That early environment of warmth, family, and companionship shaped the generous and gentle man David became.

A master carpenter by trade, David took deep pride in his work. He had a rare ability to create something lasting with his hands, combining skill, patience, and care in everything he built. That same craftsmanship showed up in all parts of his life.

David found joy in many pursuits. Music was a constant companion, and he especially loved playing the guitar. He had a deep affection for dogs and for all animals, and he spent many hours volunteering at his local food bank, always ready to help where help was needed. Friends remember that generosity wasn't something David scheduled-it was simply how he lived. He was the person you could count on, whether you needed a hand, a favor, or quiet company.

He also loved to travel, grow plants, work through jigsaw puzzles, and lose himself in books as an avid reader.

David was never married, but he shared a long and meaningful relationship with his partner, Cathy, who preceded him in death more than 20 years ago after her own battle with breast cancer. David was also a devoted foster father to Tommy, whom he loved deeply and spoke of with pride. Beyond family by blood, David had an expansive chosen family of friends who meant the world to him.

David will be remembered for his kindness, curiosity, generosity, gentle humor, and thoughtfulness. He cared deeply about people and showed that care through action. His presence made others feel seen, supported, and valued-and that is the legacy he leaves behind.

A celebration of life will be held at the Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church, 9601 Cedar Ln, Bethesda, MD 20814 on April 24, 2026 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to cancer research organizations, local food banks, or animal shelters-causes that reflected the values he lived by.

David Hoffman lived quietly, loved deeply, and gave freely. He will be missed beyond words and remembered always.
